EAGLEPEDIA REPEATED April 1, 2008 Eggshell Texture & Structure Eggshells vary widely in surface texture. Most eggs are smooth but some, like those of the Cormorant, can be quite rough. As well, eggs of cormorants are chalky, rather than shiny, as in tinamous. Duck eggs are oily and waterproof, and cassowary eggs are very heavily pitted. http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/vexhibit/...e/textstruc.htm ![]() Tinamou Eggs .......................................Cormorant eggs ![]() Eagle eggs AND April 2, 2008 Regardless of how smooth an egg may feel, all eggshells have tiny holes or pores. The domestic hen's egg, for example, may have 7500 pores. Most of these pores are at the blunt end of the egg. Pores connect the egg with its surroundings. Respiratory gases as well as water vapour travel through these channels and enable the egg to breathe. http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/vexhibit/...e/textstruc.htm ![]() AND April 3, 2008 We normally think of eggshells as being very fragile. However, eggshells are remarkably strong and durable. They provide the embryo with good protection from predators as well as from soil invertebrates and harmful bacteria. http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/vexhibit/...e/textstruc.htm ![]() (not an eagle egg) AND April 4, 2008 Eggshells are made of calcium and magnesium salts within a fibrous network. Calcite is the main salt used as building material for the shell. As the embryo develops, calcium is transferred from the shell to the growing bones of the embryo. After a chick hatches, the mother sometimes eats the shell to recover some of the calcium lost in the making of an egg. The outer surface of the eggshell is covered by the cuticle. The cuticle is a thin layer made of proteins. The cuticle adds strength to the shell, gives the shell its texture and provides a barrier against bacteria. http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/vexhibit/...e/textstruc.htm ![]() ![]() (candling a chicken egg) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Fine Zachary, thanks for asking! And how are you? We all look forward to seeing what you've been working on. We've just had some pouring rain during the early morning hours, now it looks as the sun may be coming out! I must go out & water the potted plants that don't get the rain, then get ready for church.

Happy Birthday K-26! Here is a baby picture of our lovely PH mom when she was being fostered into the West End nest in 2002. She is the eaglet on the right.

Aww, cute pic Sarah! Ok, here's the latest project that I've been working on. This was a partner project, where we had to make up the name of an energy drink company, and create a logo. There was many different versions, but here's the final logo we came up with. We named our company hyper, for obvious reasons. (sorry for the bad quality)![]() Then we had to come up with 2 flavours that our company would make, and create labels for them. We had to do this seperately at first, so here's the two labels I came up with. ![]() Then we worked together to create the final labels. I really like how they turned out! ![]() This whole project took about 3 or 4 days to complete. I reallyl ike the final product! Next time we come in, we're going to put the labels on bottles. |
