I took this shot of a red-winged blackbird this morning:

George, I think there must be something wrong with my shooting technique that is contributing to softness and sometimes blurriness in some of my images - I took another shot of this same bird a second later with virtually the same settings and it was quite soft/blurred. As a test this morning I also took shots right down to 1/1000s and saw ones that weren't sharp. I wonder if I'm letting the camera move a bit as I'm pushing the shutter?

Pretty blackbird Ian... are you just loving that camera????? so much fun.. also liked your hawk the other day... I try and remember to take a breath and hold it as I am taking the picture...I am more still and focused on what I am doing... I tend to get sloppy taking too many pictures at once so this helps me...It ruins my day when I have a great shot that I didn't concentrate on enough...

Well, here I am on my bicycle there Linda! (the motorcycles were something we could check out from the compound-there were only 6 miles of paved road in Juba)

I wonder if I'm letting the camera move a bit as I'm pushing the shutter?

that could do it. However this shot is spiffy! The problem with using any super long focal lengthed lens is that the depth of field/range of focus is alot narrower as the focal length increases. Granted the resolution online is not as good as if we were viewing a hard copy print, it would be "interesting" to actually see a print full resolution to see what is lost with the online version.

With long lenses the amount of movement needed to ,pardon the pun, fowl up a shot is a lot less than with a short focal length lens. could be from a. movement of the shooter, b movement of the camera even the pressure of the finger on the release or c movement of the lens itself or d a combination of all of the above.

That is where the frustration is with obtaining shots. It can drive us mad! MAD MAD I TELL YOU >O< :8O:
