This week, Dave, Suzanne, and I had the challenge of trying to find more nests and continue to observe the nests we do have. Suzanne was out on Santa Rosa Island and reported that both adults are still incubating at the Trap Canyon Nest. It's possible that they could have eggs in early April, so we will keep watching in hopes of finding out when the chicks hatch. She also explored Lobo Canyon on Santa Rosa searching for a possible nest for A-36 and A-39. She did not find a nest, but still found both adults hanging out together. Another pair of adult bald eagles were spotted on Santa Rosa as well, one a blue-tagged bird and the other an orange-tagged bird, so hopefully they will sit still long enough for us to read their tag numbers. On Santa Cruz, Dave and I spent a lot of time searching the Cueva Valdez territory for a nest. He hiked out to the overlook of Cueva Beach and found two bald eagles. A-00 was hanging out perched down there, and even went and caught a fish. A-00 eating fish ![]() The other eagle he saw down there was quite a surprise for both of us when he realized who it was. It was A-49! So that is great news that she is indeed alive and hanging out near Cueva Valdez. He captured some great photos of her with her changing plumage. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, all of our time spent hiking around that area this week did not lead us to a nest. We are hoping the weather this week will be more cooperative and that Cedrick and Rosanne can get in the water to explore that coastline and hopefully find a nest. Here is a view of A-00 and A-16's territory from Lady's and Baby's Harbor: ![]() I didn't find an eagle nest when I went out there, but I did find a smaller raptor's nest. ![]() Both Dave and I checked on the Sauces nest this week and found the adults still incubating, so we will let you know as soon as an egg hatches. Other exciting news is that we saw A-17 and K-11 in the stages of nest building. Both adults were bringing sticks back to a pine tree and rearranging them. There isn't anything substantial in the trees right now, but I'm sure they can build a nest very quickly as we have seen lots of the Catalina pairs do this year. So it's possible they too can lay eggs later this month. It was too far away to take pictures with my camera, and the wind wouldn't let me take pictures through the spotting scope. Cedrick and Rosanne will keep their eyes out this week and watch them continue to build their nest. On the way to observe A-17 and K-11, I saw 6 eagles flying together above the ridge road on Santa Cruz. I couldn't believe it, so stopped to take lots of pictures and try to get tag numbers on the birds. Unfortunately, they were too high to read and it was too windy to keep the spotting scope still. But it was still a great sight to see. ![]() ![]() Cont. . . |

Three cheers for all of you and all of the hard work you do! So exciting that you finally saw A-49! I know we've all been wondering since her GPS unit fell off a few weeks ago. Great to see the pictures of her too!Sorry you weren't able to find any new nests yet. I know you'll keep looking and we'll all keep our talons crossed for your success! |

The new Grassland pair are building in a tree this time - very interesting. It is such good news that Cruz was spotted and photographed! Thank you so much!! When her GPS stopped moving I did a 'card spread' for her, being the shamanic old crone that I am  , and the Cards said she was still "wandering", being a "magician" and "gaining her crown". I was reassured but not totally at ease until today, considering my intelligence 'source'. The Cards were right, as they usually are! Viva Cruz! :soar:

What a spectacular report!! SIX eagles soaring together on Santa Cruz....WOW! I am so very relieved to hear A-49 is doing well...our princess beginning to get her white crown feathers! She could be nesting next year...yes?? I've got mixed feelings about the "new" Grassland pair going up to a tree. I'm glad in that it will give them a better chance at success but sad to no longer have the novelty of a grassland nest to watch and learn about. But it's all about survival of the species and I hope they are able to have a successful nest this year. GREAT report, IWS Crew! |

Oh my Gosh, Our Princess Cruz is becoming a big lady bird! Wow! She's gonna be the most beautiful eagle on Santa Cruz! Thank you all for everything you do, and your gorgeous photo's. Lady's harbor was one of my favorites, and we would take our inflatable over to Baby's and hang out. Thanks again! |

Thrilling sight to see all those eagles soaring together! They really gave you all a beautiful and exciting performance! They rewarded you for your hard work by giving you this marvelous display Cruz is looking terrific and heading to be a gorgeous adult! K26 & K10 would be proud of their first offspring--if they were human and cared about such things

Another fabulous update-- and oh! I was SO excited to see Cruz! Our little wild eagle girl is growing up. Amazing to see the changes in her feathers. I'm glad to know she is okay. I guess she "heard" us all worrying about her and decided to show her pretty self. How many miles of hiking do you guys get in over the course of a week? Must be an awful lot! Thanks for keeping us in the loop! Lauri |
