Eaglepedia Revisited March 26, 2007 Not particularly about eagle eggs but ... Drawdown occurs when the air cell changes shape as the embryo, using the egg tooth, punctures the inner shell membrane and enters the air cell. The egg is designed to allow ease of exit from the egg, and the egg tooth is used to begin unzipping the egg shell in a circular manner, usually at the larger end of the egg. Hatching usually begins partly because of the increased carbon dioxide level in the egg which causes the embryo to twitch it's muscles, puncturing the inner shell membrane by the egg tooth. The chick begins to breathe the air in the air cell but the carbon dioxide level begins to rise again, the pipping muscle at the base of the neck starts to twitch again. Abdominal muscles also twitch at the same time, helping draw the yolk sac into the celoem with the leg muscles gaining strength as they twitch. <a href='http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/incubation.html' target='_blank'>http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/incubation.html</a> When the egg begins to "draw down" (the air space in the egg enlarges and becomes elliptical in shape instead of the normal round), hatching time is near. One side of this now-elliptical air cell will extend down one side of the inside of the shell. The other side remains up near the top of the egg - the elliptical appearance. This is usually the time when the egg would be moved to the hatcher - a container with high humidity but no egg turning ability. Higher humidity is the best - it makes it less likely for the internal membrane to stick to the hatching chick. If that should happen, the chick must be assisted out of the shell or they will die trying to get our. It's usually a 3 day period from major draw down to hatching. <a href='http://www.voren.com/94-05-03.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.voren.com/94-05-03.htm</a> AND April 13, 2007 If a fertile egg survives incubation, hatching can be a very long process with sometimes 24 hrs. passing from first piercing until the chick is free. The wet chick will peep, lying with eyes closed. The egg tooth used to break the egg shell, can be seen at the end of its tiny beak but will disappear in about a month. The hatchling is covered with beige/gray down, the skin and legs a bright pink. The little bill is grayish/black with a white tip. Near the end of week one, the skin takes on a blue tinge and the legs begin to yellow, the bill turning dark. In a couple more weeks, the bill will become a dark gray/black and the talons black. Good Morning everyone!!!!! I had the best day ever yesterday. We went and checked out our local nest here in Alabama to see if the twins here had fledged yet and my daughter and I got the show of our Eagle lifetime. The parents flew through the trees just talking and screeching. I thought they were calling the babies but noooo they were fighting off an immature eagle that was too close to the nest. My daighter and I couldn't believe we were hearing the actually live calls of the eagles without hearing over a computer speaker. It was AWESOME!!! We just teared up. I was so grateful that I got to share this with my 10 year old. We saw lots of fighting yesterday between several other immature ealges and a mature one. It was something else. The Mature one came from way up in the sky and tucked his wings back and drove straight for the 2 immature ones. We thought they were going to crash. I wished so bad that I hadn't forgotten my video camera. WOW!! what a Day. :soar:
