On a good pet news front today. There was a puppy mill which was raided by the Pennsylvania SPCA that rescued 146 yorkshire terriers a few months ago and the puppy mill owner was cited with over 150 counts of animal mistreatment under the newest anti "puppy mill" law past here in our state last year. The good news is that the owner pleaded GUILTY to all counts as charged! The even gooder news is that now all 146 Yorkies are able to now be adopted out to proper homes! This new law was finally passed to help remove the bad stigma Pennsylvania has as a haven for the horrid puppy mills who often sell sick and mal treated dogs to mall pet stores and other less than savory merchants. The biggest operatos allegedly of puppy mills are the amish/mennonite community in the more rural regions of penssylvania such as in our lancaster and berks counties which are not too far away from where i live. Puppy mill owners deserve to be put into a ring to let the dogs have at them instead of jail. jail is too good for them. |

Eaglepedia Revisited February 27, 2007 If you've ever watched a chicken peck its way out of an egg, then you know that hatching is hard work. Newly hatched bald eagles are naked, wet, nearly blind, exhausted and in need of constant care and support from their parents! They weigh only about 2 1/2 - 3 3/4 oz. and are covered with a pale gray down. The beak is black with a white tip and an egg tooth still attached. The new chick cannot regulate its body temperature so the parents work hard to keep it warm. For the first 10 days, the parents will supply the heat needed by the eaglets to survive - he will nestle in among the feathers of the parents (brooding patch area) and the parents will "tuck" them in by pulling insulating nest material around the chick's body to help keep it warm. "Field Guide to the Bald Eagle" ![]() (Baby Star) (Additional tidbit from Bee) This bit of information was posted this morning on the Blackwater thread (the eggs are due to hatch any day now and there has been speculation about spots on one of the eggs). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dark spot(s) on egg are usually debris. When an egg starts to pip, the egg tooth will make an outwardly facing indentation in the shell which lets in some air so he can breath. This first piping hole is made becasue the chick has run out of air that is in the air cell of the egg, which is at the larger end of the egg. First he punctures the membrane that encloses him, and he gets the air from the air cell, and takes a rest. When the air in the air cell is used up, he punctures the egg itself. When he begins to run out of air (before and after he punctures the membrane), his neck twitches (convulses) which causes his head to move up and down. There is a small pointed calcium deposit (egg tooth) on the top of his beak and that is what puts the hole in the membrane and then later, the hole in the shell itself. After he has rested and gotten some air from the air cell, he also pushes with his feet against the inside of the shell. This pushing with the feet rotates him inside the shell. At the same time, the egg tooth scores the inside of the shell, usually in a circle around the top third (big end) of the egg. After the egg is scored almost all the way around, he pushes the top off and rests some more. It is hard work and he stops a lot (usually) during the whole process for rest. Also, when he pushes on the inside of the shell with his feet in order to rotate and score the shell from the inside, those motions help him to absorb the yolk sac into his body, which is very important to have happen before he hatches. This is what would be considered a "normal hatching". Of course there are variations, especially if there are problems to do with too high or low humidity, or weak chick. AND April 4, 2007 An Eagle is a "semi-altricial nestling" which means they are covered in down when they hatch, eyes closed and not able to move about! They depend on their parents for food and care. The nest is usually in a tree and for the first several days, the hatchlings just rest and sleep with the parents watching over the babies. The parents take turns brooding the chicks to keep them warm and dry. AND April 7, 2007 The first couple of weeks, there is nearly always an adult with the chicks. They are unable to regulate their body temperatures yet so the parents provide warmth as they rest against the brood patch, tucking them in with the grass of the nest "cup". If you do not see an adult on the nest, you can bet they are in a nearby tree! The adults will spread their wings so as to provide shade for the nestlings. ![]() (look familiar? - 2006 forum photo PH) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Good morning! It was so nice here yesterday after work I walked for three miles and did some yard work. So many good posts yesterday!Deb, thanks for sharing Whitley's news report. So happy to hear she is doing better. And thanks for posting your vacation slide shows. Sometimes we need a vacation from the vacation. Carole, I hope your journey home is going well. Thanks for all your fabulous updates. Cheryl, I hope the young cranes are having a safe journey as well. Trish, awesome video of the Star Ranch barn owl banding. So cool you were able to hold one. Jann, thaks for posting the hikes to West End nest and Two Harbors nest. This is the first time I've viewed them. You really need to be a good climber to make it into those nests. Goober fledged yesterday at 8:04 west coast time. I was at work of course and I haven't been able to find a picture or video. I didn't want to post the empty nest. Too sad, but I do know that Phoebe continues to feed Roza and Goober nearby the nest.
