It’s chick time! Last Thursday morning, the first Two Harbors (TH) chick hatched and some time on Friday night or Saturday morning the second TH chick hatched. The following link should take you to a site that has captures and videos of the 2009 TH chicks. http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCAM/i...?showtopic=3764 We changed the timer on the camera to come on earlier and turn off later in the day. It sure is wonderful to watch the little chicks get fed and cared for by their dedicated parents. The Twin Rocks egg/s is/are due for hatching this week. I have been checking them every other day but nothing yet. It’s too bad we have such a limited view of that nest. Here’s a picture I took yesterday where one of the adults is incubating at the nest and the other one is roosting right below. ![]() Some time between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, the Pinnacle Rock (PR) nest lost one egg. There’s no way for us to know which one broke so we are just going to wait to find out once the other egg hatches (assuming it will). Here’s a picture of the nest. ![]() The heat waves have been making it really hard to have a good view of the nest bowl so I don’t have a picture of the lone egg but I can tell there’s only one. ![]() It is getting close for the West End nest too. I’m sure I will be reporting a lot of new hatches next week. Last Wednesday morning when I checked the Seal Rocks (SR) nest I wasn’t sure if I was seeing one or two eggs on the nest. It was very hot and the heat waves made it too hard for me to confirm so I didn’t mention anything. ![]() On Friday morning I returned to the observation spot and even though it was a little blurry it was clear there was only one egg. However, after the parent stepped out of the nest bowl and walked away, this little fluff started moving right nest to the egg. Evidently, the chick was responsible for the missing egg. Based on our observations, we wrote down on our calendar that they were supposed to hatch around April 4th. It was over a week earlier than we expected, it might have even hatched before the TH chick, no way to tell for sure. I was just very happy to see the little critter move, I was relieved. ![]() The second egg hasn’t hatched yet. It’s a bit unusual that it has taken this long but there’s not way of telling what number egg it is so we’ll keep checking. ![]() I made a video of the SR nest on three different days. ![]() On Monday I got a visual on K78 flying over Haypress reservoir. He was pretty far away but fortunately he landed so I was able to get a little closer to identify him. ![]() Definitely K78 ![]() Try to spot him on the next image. ![]() Cont... |

On Saturday, my father and I went kayaking along the Rattlesnake territory not too far away from town. We didn’t have to kayak too long before I spotted one of the eagles.![]() A little closer ![]() Right when we were about to leave, the other adult showed up and they both started fishing right next to where we were paddling. Pretty soon, gulls, pelicans and sea lions came to feast on the school of fish that was swimming by very close to us. It was amazing to watch all these animals, especially the eagles, in action. I made a short video, I apologize for the unsteadiness of the film but it’s hard to film on a floating kayak, try not to get dizzy. ![]() I have been checking on the Middle Ranch pair every day, always finding the male, K93, and the female, A32, a few times. The last time I saw them together was on Monday afternoon so they have not yet laid eggs. They have been perching on the pine trees again, where the old nest was but no more nesting behavior has been observed. This is A32 ![]() I returned from feeding the birds a couple of hours ago and while I was cleaning Pimu’s cage she started vocalizing but I didn’t think much of it since she is very vocal all the time. I was cleaning her pond and I looked up to her perch and saw K78 perched on the outside of the cage about 4ft above Pimu. I walked slowly to the door to go get my camera from the car but he took off to the reservoir where, by the way, was not welcomed since K93 started chasing him out right away. (I wish most eagle would make it that easy to ID them). That’s all for this week, Steffani |

Thanks Steffani .... another super update ... some highs .. some lows ... lots of wonderful photos. Fantastic news from the SR nest ... lets hope that this is egg #1 that hatched and that egg #2 is still viable ... although last year they only had Gulliver/K-62. Sorry about the PR nest losing one ... but crossed for all the others to safely hatch. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed about all the nests. Take care out there. |

Wow, Steff! So much news, I hardly know where to begin. Lots of highs and lows. Sorry to hear about the lost egg, but excited to hear about the early hatching on SR. Loved the video of you & your dad watching the feeding frenzy! You did a super job of filming all the activity, and, as Ojailala said, you & your dad sound like you were having a blast. How exciting to see K78 so close up too! Too bad your camera was so far away. Maybe next time. Look forward to hearing about lots of hatchings in the next week! Thanks for all the work you do and taking time to write such a super report for us! |

Love the news this week -- the new Seal Rocks chick is exciting. Great to see the photo of K-78 too--and all the rest as well. Interesting that K-78 would come so close to Pimu's enclosure. What a treat for both you and Pimu! Thanks so much for the photos & news...I've yet to watch the videos, but am REALLY looking forward to your kayak (video) adventure. How exciting! |

Steffani - What a wonderful update - thanks for all the pics and video of the nest activity - glad you were able to share what you do with your dad - he must be very proud of you, I know all of us are - because of you we get to see so much more than the activity on the live cams. |

Just got home where I can see all the pix & videos and wow! I love the video of the RS pair fishing. I would just die to be that close to a fishing pair of eagles! Was Pimu upset about her surprise visitor or did she just take it in stride? I wonder what 78 was thinking... Thank you for the great update, Steffani, and we have another chick! I'm sad about the lost egg at PR but looking forward to lots more chicks in the next week. |
