I found this article on the removal of bees. I never realized that the purpose of the smoker was to make the bees gorge on honey. I always thought it was to make them sleepy. http://greenoc.freedomblogging.com/2009/04...nted-bees/6327/ |

Thanks, Penny. I'm feeling much better now. Slept all day Sunday and half of Monday and that really helped. We went to San Diego yesterday to play with the boys. Ended up taking them to Sea World which was a great hit especially the penguins. I think we were there almost an hour. Of course they both wanted a stuffed penguin and of course grandma had to get them one. They both carried those penguins the rest of the day and took them to bed last night. Too cute. The kids are winging their way to Germany right now. DIL has lots of family there and since DS and DIL lived in Munich for almost 3 years they have lots of friends to see. They want to show Martin the apartment they lived in when he was born and the park he played in down the street. He's seen lots of pictures but they left when he was one so now gets to see the real thing. Martin's German is quite good so he ought to be pretty fluent when they return in 16 days. The first half they are staying with friends in Munich who have a little boy the same age as Martin so they should talk up a storm and the second half they'll be with a cousin who has a son the same age as Martin. He and Martin have already talked on the phone and that went well. I just hope they survive the flight over with the Enegizer Bunny. Adam confined to an airplane will be a challenge.

christine - I thought it was to quiet/disorient them so they wouldn't attack - who knew it was to make them EAT themselves silly !

Hmmm, I see that you will be at Bubba Gumps on the 7th. That might be a possibility. Have to check a few things.

Since Carole is on the road for the next few days, here is the latest Panda cam update: ![]() Wednesday, April 1 I just wanted to give a quick update for everyone who didn't see Xi Lan on PandaCam yesterday morning. Even after only one day outside, Xi Lan has become comfortable enough to completely explore the entire outdoor yard. He seems to be having himself a good ole time. Instead of just looking at things and noting their positions, he is actually interacting with the things he comes across. We noted him climbing the tree limbs bolted to the climbing structure that extend upward to the upper deck. He climbed higher than the deck on the tree limb, but did not get off at that floor. Instead, he simply went back down after a short while to continue exploring. He was then seen rolling in the large pile of straw in the center of the exhibit that was left over from baby-proofing. While he was rolling, we saw him self- anointing himself. This is a behavior done by pandas when they come across a smell they enjoy or that is new to them. They do this by rolling in the scent and rubbing their arms and paws over the top of their head and body, thus covering themselves in this new incredible scent. Yang Yang is often seen doing this with his favorite scent item, Tabasco. After Xi Lan was all scented up, he continued his adventure in the moat, climbing down with apparent ease. While down there, he decided to attack the drain grate at the bottom of the moat. I don't know if he actually won the battle, but the grate didn't seem phased. After the long, heated battle, he returned topside just as we were giving him access to the dayroom. It didn't take long for him to wander in and in pure young panda fashion, quickly dozed off for a nice long nap. Kenn Harwood Lead Keeper of Carnivores ![]() Images by Zoo Atlanta and Helene |

 I was watching K10 so intently for so long I forgot how much coffee I put in the maker and had to start over. It sounds like there is chirping coming from underneath K10.

Awww - Thanks for taking over the panda updates for Carole while she's on the road, Penny! When you post them I can even see the photos of that adorable Squish! Sounds like he's having a great time exploring and perfuming himself. Peetie - I'm so happy you finally have your new kitty at home. It's about time, huh? I can't see the pictures from work but will be sure to check them out when I get home! |

Remember Bob The Cat? He’s doing very well, still living in an inside enclosure, but you can tell that they take him out several times a day and work with him. He still purrs when he sees people and is “friendly” (you know, within reason). His lead trainer was the one that took us in, and he demonstrated like a good boy how he can sit on command (which is amazing…can I teach my cats to do that??). His trainer was able to pick him up and he tolerated that for about 5 minutes before getting rambunctious, but did REALLY well. He’s SO big. On my way home from the bus stop i saw these tiny blue flowers atop the green lawn and had to shoot them. However, I have NO IDEA what they are. They are some sort of weed i think which are ground cover as theyre only as tall as a decently cut lawn would be trimmed to![]() one more pansy shot from the rack out in front of my supermarket
