That bird couldn't be a buteo like a red-shouldered hawk because of the proportions of its body and tail. I didn't post a shot which showed the tail as well but you can see here that it has a very long narrow tail with black bands on the tail:![]() These proportions are the classic indicators of an accipiter. However checking through my field guides last night I think it's correct that the plumage doesn't seem particularly goshawk-like. I can't find anything that would match up the rufous plumage on the chest with the gos. The next option would then be a Coopers hawk - perhaps a rather big one but I can't believe this could be a sharp-shinned, which is the smallest of the three species. |

Well it isnt a red shouldered so my guess is a goshawk by the eyes. |
