Tuesday April 7 We are having a mini lunch get together for Elaine Ruth and Michelle on April 7 at Bubba Gumps in Long Beach. The lunch will be at 2:00 p.m. so they can catch the Catalina boat at 5:45 p.m. I know, it's a week day and many of us work....this is just the best time for seeing the two of them. Please let me know if you can make it. marjori365@aol.com Hope to see you there. |

Good morning. Yes, Peetie, the news at PH yesterday was very sad. for the second egg today.Deb, I like this let someone else clean day. Hope they do a good job. Has anyone heard about the two redtail hawks who have built a nest on a window ledge of the Franklin Institute. The wind blew the nest down several times but they kept rebuilding. Finally someone built a nest box for them and now their three eggs are about to hatch. And they put up a web cam! Hawk Nest UPDATE: Be on the lookout for signs of hatching anytime after April 6. Two Red-tailed Hawks have built a nest on a window ledge at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The nest sits just outside a window where a camera has been positioned to create this video stream. The camera looks through the glass window pane which is 24 inches wide (~61 cm). No artificial lighting has been added, so the nest is only visible during daylight hours.

Eaglepedia Revisited April 5, 2007 Bald eagle chicks will require a lot of food! The father will assume the majority of the hunting duties in the beginning while mom tends to the eaglets, keeping them warm and safe from owls, ravens, gulls and others who may try to kill or eat the eaglets. The chicks may eat up to 8 times a day. Most days are spent sleeping, eating and occasionally fighting. They raise their heads and take tiny pieces of fish from their parent's bill. It is quite amazing to watch a powerful parent who rips at the flesh of their prey and can swallow enormous chunks of food, gently feed these tiny, helpless chicks. ![]() "Bald Eagles" - Lynn M. Stone AND April 18, 2007 Often the male eagle will have their prey taken from them probably because the male, being smaller in size, is the subordinate sex of the pair. Responses of the female when food is brought to the nest can range from a weak response - fluffing her feathers to maybe make herself appear even larger to a very strong reaction - a loud, long drawn out vocalization which can be ear piercing. Before the male lands on the nest, she will lean forward lowering her head, fluffing her feathers and calling out. This display may carry on until the male exits the nest. Even if the female is feeding on a fish, she may rush over and take his fish from him upon his arrival! Sometimes the female is OK with the male feeding the chicks and himself but sometimes, she demands control over all food. Given the female's dominant role, there are times when the male is not allowed to eat on the nest. I just wanted to say ------ I've been watching the PH cams (and the others) since 2006 - experiencing Cruz's fledging and journey thru life ........but with the good, must come some sorrow....... Limuw Skye and now "Windy" but in their short lives - they have given so much to us - we celebrated their hatching and existence against the odds we watched them grow and live, even if only for a few days or months we rejoiced at their contribution to the eagle effort - even if small we cried when they left us they gave us knowledge, they gave us an opportunity to observe, they gave us hope Cruzers and visitors should celebrate these 3 eagles and all the others we've come to know and we should continue to look to the future - hoping for continued success, one step at a time and thankful for the opportunity to learn, contribute our help in any way we can to the effort and to share and exeprience the life stories of these eagles, together!
