Hello everybody,

We have excellent news to share with you this week!

On the previous update we announced that the Two Harbors nest had two chicks, which are doing really well. The Seal Rocks nest had also hatched an egg. The second SR egg was still present on the nest several days after the first chick had hatched so we were pretty sure it was not viable; the second egg finally disappeared on Monday.

Here is a video of the Seal Rocks chick. (It has grown a lot since the last time I saw it)

Pete took this picture on Monday

I checked on them today and got a couple of pictures too

The other three Catalina nests, Twin Rocks, Pinnacle Rock, and West End nest also hatched at least one chick each!
The TR egg/s hatched right around the time we expected. On Thursday, I watched one of the adults step out of the nest bowl and look between its legs, acting as if something was poking it from underneath, which is common hatching behavior.

Pete checked on them on Friday and by then a chick had hatched!
I made a short video of the Twin Rocks nest yesterday. Unfortunately, the view of the nest is not the greatest and we will not be able to see the chick/chicks until it/they get a little bigger but we know for sure they have a least one chick; Pete watched a feeding over the weekend. (fingers crossed for twins at TR)

The Pinnacle Rocks hatched its lone egg this week too! On Sunday Pete was able to see the little chick moving in the nest bowl. He took some video that day and I took some video today.

The West End nest hatched a chick yesterday! We don’t know if they laid one or two egg but I guess we will find out if we se two little fuzzy heads moving about in the nest bowl in the next few days. (fingers crossed for twins at the WE too)

I saw one of the juveniles while I was hiking along the Silver Canyon ridges. I didn’t have my telemetry radio and antenna with me so I don’t know who it was but it’s nice to see them around whoever that was.

We are going to be checking on the Rattlesnake pair soon, if they try to breed again this year (and we hope they do) it would be right around this time. We will keep you posted.

The Middle Ranch pair has been spotted at the reservoir at various places, but no more breeding behavior. We don’t know if the have stopped trying but just in case we keep checking on them even though it’s getting late in the season for them.
Pimu and Pee’ ech are doing really well. We are still trying to figure out what to call the golden eagle since its true gender was revealed a few ago.
Next weekend, the Catalina Island Conservancy will bring many Avalon residents who don’t normally get a chance to travel to the interior of the island and they will stop at the cages so I can give them a little talk about our Bald Eagle Reintroduction Program and to visit our captive eagles. If it’s not to windy I plan to take Pee’ ech out for an outdoor program. I’ll let you know next week how it went.

Happy chick viewing at the nests we have cams on and we’ll be watching the chicks on the rest of the nests.

What great news all around the nests Steffani - hoping for 2nd egg hatches and hoping of course for healthy eaglets that have hatched! I'm still holding out hope for MR pair but alas-may have to wait for '10!

What a great opportunity to share Heidi and Pimu with folks - sure hope you can take Heidi out for a demo - she's lovely and so regal! AND yes so is Pimu - just lots of attitude with that gal!

Thank you so much for the update and info and all the photos/videos you and Peter provide to keep us informed - all truly appreciated. :}^

Dear Steffani,

Well, with all the new kids being born, looks like the summer will mean a very busy banding season for you all!

Have you talked to the Tongva elders about coming back to rename Pe'ech? I wonder what they'll say when you tell tham that their "little brother" is their "little sister"? :D

Thanks to you and Peter for the great shots and videos, as usual! Keep up the good work!
