Good morning, Peetie. I agree. Chicks on the nests! Yahoooooooo! I counted four there, Deb. :^: :^: :^: :^: Hoping for lots of fish deliveries today. >>:

Karen, the pictures you took of all the beautiful flowers at Carlsbad Flower Fields yesterday are truly “A-mazing “. How many acres of flowers do they own? I really enjoyed watching the slideshow.

Peetie, I hope your black kittie will be ok. It's a good idea to take him to the vet to find out what's going on. <3

Eaglepedia Revisited

November 6, 2007

Nest Sanitation: Bald eagles eat a lot so of course they poop a lot! The poop contains a lot of "whitewash" so if a baby were pooping IN the nest, it would be noticeable. Eagles do not produce fecal sacs as most songbirds do. The baby eagle, instead, wanders to the edge of the nest, turns and poops over the edge. This will keep the nest clean but the branches and ground below - oh my! The "whitewash" is the bird's urine. The kidneys filter the blood and the nitrogen wastes are excreted as urine. In mammals, the nitrogen wastes are in the form of urea, which is yellowish, has an ammonia-like smell and is very toxic, so needs to be diluted with a LOT of water to keep from poisoning the animal or human. (Mammalian fetuses actually start excreting urine while they're still inside the mother, but her amniotic fluid dilutes it and is constantly being "cleaned" by her blood.)

Because the eagles develop in eggs, they can't excrete urea so their nitrogen wastes are excreted as uric acid. It is white and very toxic and precipitates to a solid when very concentrated. Inside the egg, when a chick excretes blood wastes, they collect in a little chamber called the"allantois." When you find the shell of a successfully hatched egg, you sometimes can see the chalky deposit.

A red tail in its nest…with an eagle’s nest above it. Obviously with big nests come lots of bird poop!

and a look at the TH nest - that's now "whitewash" on the rocks behind the parents! however - this is a good source that the chicks are eating often and well so a necessary observation!

Here is the update on the Norfolk triplets posted by the Wildlife Biologist yesterday.
All three of the eaglets continue to do well. The difference in size since they hatched is remarkable. Bald eagles grow rapidly adding on average 105g(males) -130g(females)of body weight per day - more then any other bird in North America.

All three chicks continue to feed well. Not every chick is fed during every feeding - this is not a cause for concern as this pair feeds their young quite frequently. You can see the light down that the chicks hatched with being replaced by a heavier darker grey woolly down. The chicks ability to self-regulate their own body temperature is improving, allowing them to be unbrooded for longer periods of time.

We are aware of the problems with the camera. Sometime on April 6th certain camera functionally was lost. While the camera is still broadcasting and operators are able to access it - we are not at this time able to either move the camera or turn on the night vision capability. We are in touch with the camera manufacturer and will continue to work to solve this problem.

Hope kittie feels better quickly ......
It's sunny here but a bit chilly- brrrrrr
I only have to work 1/2 day - this is usually when our scout troop takes a "trip" but not this year :( but I've always had these days off and I'm not giving them back. However, boss whined so am working 1/2 day and then off plus off Fri. He thinks we're still going away - it's either that or I'd get no day off ......

Thanks for the triplet update - it's hard to believe how quickly eaglets can grow and change - sometimes seemingly overnight! I love Carole's update collection and with all the nests hatching at different times all around the country - we can keep an eye on chicks for quite some time :)^

Cheryl - how's those cranes doing? GO CRANES GO! :X:

Here is another glimpse of the little bobblehead on the Sidney nest. Lots of peeping going on here. At one point yesterday there were more than 900 people viewing this nest! When I clicked on livestream earlier this morning it sounded like a chick may have been pecking on its shell. Maybe twins today. :X: :^: :^:

Nice trinket box, Deb. Nothing wrong with treating yourself to a little something once in a while. rofl

According to the update at Blackwater the meals have been a little light lately so its good to see them being fed this morning. The fish looks pretty small though. I hope the fishing gets better at this nest. >>: >>:
