Marti....it wasn't for totally altruistic reasons that I checked with them beforehand... they had a 'sanctuary' with a couple of unreleasable raptors and some other birds in process of rehabbing and said that if it didn't look as though it could fly free in the wild, that they would take it in.... let it fly in a habitat and try again, or not .... the only place I had for him to test his wings was in my house and I didn't want him to get injured and I had to keep him from my 'pet' birds who were guarded and jealous of the attention he got. When his wings were clipped, just like a pet bird's are at times, he was contented to sit with the family when not in his box by the window. I had to pay for the vitamin supplements and the antibiotics (only needed those at the beginning) and the wildlife volunteer vet 'donated' his services for check-ups as needed. Such a little ball of fluff and personality, especially for a rather non-descript bird - same family as sparrows and buntings ! I had a friend who 'bird watched' as a light hobby - enjoyed it but was not particularly knowledgeable ... if I asked what she saw on her outings she would reply 'oh, a mocking bird, a jay and lots of LGBs - sometimes it would be LBBs instead ... stood for 'little grey birds' or little brown birds'
