Here is a story and interview with David Hancock about the new Saanich eaglet:

Eagle Hatching On Saanich - CBC

Since "Hope" seems to be a popular name for our new PH eaglet, does anyone know what the Chumash word for hope is?

Ian, I am sure it will be something hard to pronounce... that is a hard language to understand ...

So sorry to hear about our little crane. :(

I was coming home from the post office about two blocks from home, and I see another bird in the street. I slowed and it was upright on the center line... in the hot sun. I made a u-turn and drove back to it, got out and picked it up and placed it on the passenger seat of the car. It was a dove. I don't think the car hit it. I think it was soooo close though that it ran over it's tail feathers. This bird has a pink, bare stub. I drove home and found a box to put it in. When I went back to the car, it suddenly flapped it's wings and somehow got over to the driver seat. I managed to pick it up and put it in the box and took it in the house.

I have a larger bird cage I am not using, so put it in there for the time being on a little towel and water and food. I stuck my fingers in the water and then on his beak. Finally, I saw a little swallowing going on. Next went down to the local feed store and picked up a small cockateil cage. He is on a stand in the living room across from my cockatiel. Mikko is keeping an eye on the dove and singing it some songs.

I found a bird rescue person - finally! He is about ten miles away, and he rescues small animals and birds. I don't think a bird can fly very well without tail feathers.(?) So we'll see.... DH hasn't seen the latest addition to the house either. Due home shortly. :<::

Stopping in for just a moment...have been helping DH go through years of "stuff" weeding out what we know we will never use again, DS's old electrical stuff, speakers, turntables, furniture DH made when we were first married, and more "stuff" that we just couldn't get rid of before...just time to clean out...would rather be doing anything but this, but it has to be done. We are lucky in that we have a Goodwill drop off spot less than a mile from us so it will be on it's way to a new homes soon. DS will come tomorrow morning and go through all the electrical stuff first.

Sorry to learn that we lost the first PH eaglet and then, today, crane #826.

I'm excited for you, Sandie...a new place, away from the mayhem that is surrounding you at this current location...and a view of the beach...just in time for summer...perfect!!!!

I'm sure you will feel much better tomorrow, Peetie. When I was about 10yrs. old Dr. prescribed something for me and within an hour I was seeing double...mother made a quick call to Dr. and he reduced amount of meds and all was OK after that.

TopaTopa..Thanks for the photos from the RR Library ...so much to remember...the review has been nice. Everytime I see the Lucky Lake life preserver it reminds me of the time I walked around that lake.

Thank you Lala!

One of our customers was there when I got back. I told him what had happened. He said, "I saw that, but I had a car on my tail and I didn't stop." :o :( Grrrrr!

It's so sad around here. The most frequent casualty from cars are wild birds, then it is raccoons, possums, and an occasional cat or dog. They are always beyond help unfortunately. Thank you :Hugs:

:><: :><: :><: Marti. Last time I rescued a bird it was a pidgeon who had apparently eaten poisoned corn...which our City in their esteemed wisdom puts out for them to keep the population down. :( Grrrr.

The vet called me back a bit later and said the bird had expired :'( . I'm sure your dove would have been toast if you hadn't picked it up too. :)^

Wrightflyer...How can one not stop to help...There are several ponds in our area and one evening I was driving along with my mother in the car. Up ahead I saw a rather large lump in the road...I realized what it was as I got closer so I stopped and scooped up a bull frog. I got in the car with it and set it in my mother's lap...no problem for her...she just kept it quiet 'till we got home and I put it in the pond behind my home.
