Eaglepedia Revisited

March 3, 2008

One of the most important duties of the adult eagle is brooding, or keeping the young eaglets warm. Though eaglets have a downy coat, they, like newborn humans, are unable to maintain their proper body temperature for a number of weeks. The parent bird sits in the nest, with the chicks huddling underneath its body for a comfortable temperature. Sometimes the brooding adult will pull nest material closer about its body to provide even greater warmth. Brooding activity will be most intense for the first month. Cold weather, rain and high winds will also cause an adult to brood the eaglets close to its body. Within 2-3 weeks, the chicks will grow a second coat of down, which allows the parent bird to sit up or partially spread its wings.

eegads where is Squish going - he sure checks everything out doesn't he..... at least he's not sitting in the water bowl now :P

edit: went into bathroom and LOOK at the pile of dirty towels - and then looked to the clothes hamper even MORE dirty stuff and then saw a pile of things on the table that need sorting and filing ..... and the birdies are calling for attention - maybe I should get up and take care of some things around here .... :<::

oh yeah - our little squirrels - their 2nd nest that they were trying to build, collapsed onto the sidewalk :( it really wasn't in a very good place - they are youngsters! no one seems to be using the original nest but we do see the pair every day as they run around goofing off. one was collecting sticks again yesterday so maybe a new nest to come???

Good morning!

That's a shame about the MIA parents, Deb
. I am guessing that no-one was willing to help out. Maybe they will realize now that no volunteers=no trip. That's my guess, anyway.

DS liked the cat gif, had to show it to him, since his part-time job is for one of those companies. :P

Squish, no, get out of the tree! :hair: Good one, Carole! Thanks for Eagleland, there are so many changes and stages to see every day.
