Hi Dr. Sharpe, When nests fail, is it ever appropriate to foster other eggs into it? I realize that this probably would not be a choice for the PH nest given the unknown factors of the demise of their offspring. But in other situations and conditions, would it still be possible (or too late) to foster at this point in time? Also, can chicks be fostered into nests, or just eggs? Just curious. Thank you! If we were able to get an egg into a nest within a few hours of failure, there is a chance they would start sitting again. We've fostered a couple healthy eggs to nests on Catalina in the past, and have been fostering chicks into nests on Catalina since 1989. We tend to keep the foster chicks until they are at least 4 or 5 days old, because those first few days are when most problems will arise. |
