Eaglepedia Revisited

April 16, 2007

When the first hatched chick is female and a male is second, he will be subordinate because he is smaller in size. Usually the female is fed and satisfied first before the male chick has a chance to feed. (63% of first hatched eggs are female/68% of 2nd hatches are male) Only recently was a sex bias in hatching sequence discovered. Sibling competition will also effect other developments including weight gain of the 2nd chick is slower, maximum growth period will be delayed, the growth of 2nd down and wing/tail/body feathers will be delayed in the subordinate chicks. It was thought for many years that eagles lay their eggs weeks apart but thru scientific observations, it was discovered that in fact, it's only days apart!

Growing Up: Eaglets grow very quickly on their high-protein diet of fish and other meats, gaining up to 1 pound of weight each week. At about 2 weeks of age, they can hold their heads up for long periods of time which enables them to eat more often. By the third week, eaglets are nearly 1 foot tall. With well-developed beaks and feet, they begin to feed themselves, eating food left at the nest by their parents. The parents are not spending much time at the nest but will sit nearby in a tree. Between 4-5 weeks, the young can stand and move around the nest. They are nearly full grown by about 6 weeks, covered with dark feathers and sporting a large dark beak!

Good morning. :}^ What an amazing weekend! I hope you all had a good Easter weekend too!

Deb, thanks for the eaglepedia info every morning. The first Norfolk chick hatched on March 21 so that means this chick was three weeks old on April 11th and should be close to one foot tall. Wow, we could barely get a glimpse of their heads when they were bobbing up and down. Once in a while a wing popped up in the air. When they were fed the eagle's head would completely disappear into the nest bowl.

SheilaB, thanks for posting the condor slideshow from the SB zoo. We took some pictures of the California condor at the Grand Canyon last summer while on vacation. They had wing blings on them and had quite a large wing span. I also enjoyed the Island fox pictures. We saw two foxes at Blackwater Wildlife Refuge when we stopped there on our way home yesterday. Baby Titi on momma's back was cute too!

Jill, nice pictures of the waterfalls. I have never been to Hawaii..

<3 Good Morning :)^
Had a wonderful Easter celebration yesterday.
It was crowded, but plenty of delicious food, and good conversation. Ate, played pool, ate. Oh, did I say ate?
Will have company here most of the week, some left yesterday and will be back. Don't know if this will affect my plans to try and make the Ojai meeting. DH and I really would like to get away for a day or two.

I was very touched yesterday watching the eagles on the nest. Sometimes I just sit in amazement at their majesty. They are truly a regal bird.

Have a great day all. <3

That's how I feel  After 2 wks. of getting to sleep in since I didn't have to go to work as early, it was sooooo hard getting up this a.m. at 5!

I hope you all had a great wknd and Easter. It went too fast for me but it was a great day with both families (my side and Jim's). And Jossy had a great time, too.
