Marti not to be an alarmist but, I've rescued many Birds and if the Dove is wild born it probably has parasites and Mites. There's a fecally transmitted organism called Cappilaria that takes a round of treatment to get rid of. Not deadly, they live in the wild with it, just not good to expose captive Birds to. We always isolate any rescues until tested or rehabilitated, which the Dove will need if you plan to release him. A licensed rehab person does this by habituating in a flight cage with others it will bond and flock with when released. Or it may already be imprinted on humans and not releasable. Sorry if I missed any info on this. I've not had much chance to keep up here, and have been shattered as most have been by the tragedy on the PH nest.

Ok..here we go all! I read the newspaper this morning and it said they were going to release a rehabilitated bald eagle at the south end of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen, New York. I live in the town so I am about 10 blocks from the lake. Wow....I said. What a treat and I was amazed. I didn't think there were that many eagles around here. (sorta) I knew there were, but not this close!! So I went and many people and students I have in our school were there and we were all excited. They tagged and put a transmitter on her, but no bling. She is a one year old, female that they think had hatched last year on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York. A deputy sheriff and an animal control officer, 2 people whom I happen to know, small world, were called about this eagle that a person had found about 3 miles from town in November of '08. They went out to check it out and the officer said he could not catch it...it ran fast!!! The injury was soft tissue damage, didn't elaborate, but the vet said no broken bones. Said it is not unusual for the eagles to hit wires and other things. It had gone to a rehab center to gain back its flying ability and did.....sorta. It flew around where they had it, but when they release it, it flew around a bit, gulls and crows were chasing it and it went into the lake after a bit. Oh my gosh, I said....NO! Well..it was ok, because it came to shore and the one man tried to net it. Eagle said no way and flew off a bit more and under a bridge. The vet said it was probably stressed with the people and all. He said it would be ok as we have a swamp at the end of the lake and he hoped it would go there. I hope it does. If you notice the top wings are red with blood...he said it wanted out of cage carrier and it was trying to get out. Talons were huge and beak too. She vocaled alot, that screaming sound. It was awesome to see and they are so BIG, even at one year. The "better" story will be on our local website (odessafile.com) probably tomorrow and pictures too. Better than mine. Gosh...this is long. Sorry! Blame this on Harpo.......she told me to post it!!!!!! Pictures are up above. Thanks for reading...enjoy! Lorraine |

My goodness, welcome to all the new eagle lovers to the Forum!! Well, all the reminders of this day two years ago when our "favorite" chick A-63 aka Limuw was hatched have brought tears to my eyes, especially with the sadness around losing both of this year's chicks on the PH nest.
I don't know that any other chick has brought so many comments or "loyalty" than Limuw. Well, maybe A-49 aka Cruz. His birth was so joyous and it was such a miracle that the nest survived the fierce winds the night before he hatched. Limuw will always be remembered, I think.
