What are the survival rates for eggs and chicks "in the wild" and without human intervention? What percentage of eggs might be expected to hatch successfully, and what percentage of those hatches might survive to fledge and even still be alive at the end of the first year?
P.S. - Peter, you have the patience of a saint as the all-knowing Eagle Guy! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Probably about 80% of fertile eggs will hatch. Only about 50% of the chicks will survive until they are a year old, and most of that mortality occurs after fledging. We've had around 85% fledging success of eagles on Catalina.

We are trying to figure out what happened to the bald eagle nest last Friday? I saw the baby hatch on Thursday...I saw attempts to feed the baby...but I never saw it actually eat...the parents were at the nest and attentive to the baby....why did it die? why didnt it eat? did it starve to death? I saw it move on Thursday--it was alive. We just dont understand what happened or why? Does anyone go to the nest and get the dead baby and figure out what happened? It seems weird that both eggs hatched and both died? What would cause the baby to not eat? The parents were so excited on Thursday and trilling before the baby hatched...I'm sure its not the fault of the parents...but we just want to understand...we are sad about the lost of the babies. sincerely, bobandana2
