Eaglepedia Revisited May 18, 2008 For the eaglets, the advantage of a crop is that they can quickly swallow food that their siblings might want, and for the adults it means the chicks can go longer between feedings. Besides storing food for later consumption, the crop also stores indigestible material -- like bones and scales. These unusable food pieces are captured in the crop and eventually molded into pellets that are later regurgitated. http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/eagle_c...5/04/index.html and April 8, 2007 In studies made of bald eagle hatchings 63% of first hatched eggs were females while 68% of second hatched eggs being males! This was only recently discovered in birds. Sibling competition affects a chick's survival but it is a factor in their overall development too - second chicks gain weight at a slower rate, the 2nd down and feathers appear at a later rate which all is in response to the amount of food the chick is getting. However, a 2nd hatched of one nest may develop faster than a 1st hatched of another nest due to food availability! More food - faster growth and development! "The Bald Eagle Haunts and Habits of a Wilderness Monarch" and April 19, 2008 The first few weeks of life in the nest consist of fighting between nest mates. The larger of the nest mates has an advantage in getting the most food from the parent. The parent eagle will tear up prey and offer it to the first mouth it sees. Younger chicks can succumb to parental neglect and physical and psychological abuse meted out by the older nest mate. It appears that the parent does not interfere on behalf of the weaker nestling and will feed the nestling that is the largest, most aggressive and most demanding. ![]() ![]() (3 day old chicks fighting in brooder at IWS) http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/breedin...ingHabitats.htm Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Good morning. I hope everyone has a good day. It will be raining off and on here today and I am off to work. Bette, thank you so much for posting the link that contains the very nice tribute to Limuw. I started watching the cams early April of 2008 so I did not know Limuw and really appreciate the opportunity to view this tribute to him. Glo77’s video of banding day was especially touching. I learned that Limuw is pronounced Lee-Moo and that is the Chumash name for Santa Cruz Island. This tribute has also given me a greater appreciation of all the time and efforts dedicated cruzers put into their captures and videos in nest observations. Thank you for all your efforts to record these amazing birds.

QUOTE (harpo516 @ Apr 14 2009, 04:00 AM) Bette thanks for posting that link = that was awesome! How come I never noticed that before? Deb, That's why I posted it - I thought a lot of the Cruzers may have missed it. Like I said, last winter in the nest off-season, I read all of the past Chats and NO's for my own information. When I came across it, I made a note, but do not recall anyone really "picking up on it" and mentioning it again. Maybe it was lost at the time (5/20/08) as all our focus and energy was concentrated on Spirit and Skye and their ordeal. It is something that I felt should be "brought forward." For ease in locating, I quoted the whole post further down this page. |

QUOTE (bette @ Apr 13 2009, 09:31 PM) Everyone, I have tried to get on here all day to post this, but work kept getting in the way (only two more tax days left). I am finally finished and want to add the following tribute to Limuw. Limuw captured my heart in ways no other eagle has. I found this post last winter in the 5/20/08 Chat at 3:08PM (on page 13), posted by Cathie/bigbird the day after Spirit and Skye were knocked off the nest. I do not know who to credit for this amazing compilation. It contains a tribute that was put together after Limuw left us, and I marked it at the time I saw it. I have wanted to share it again with all of you, and today seemed the most appropriate time to post it, especially while we are all feeling so sad by the recent events at PH. I hope I do this correctly (I have not copied like this before). Cathie/bigbird posts: "Without PH to watch but off and on, I went searching to find out if this has ever happened before. Feeling sad any way about Limuw, I found this nicely done chronology of his life. It contains captures done by many of the IWS members. As usual all I can do is give you the link. So here it is: http://www.judyb-eagles.com/eagles2007/santa_cruz.htm (end quote) I hope everyone who loved Limuw saves this for future reference. Moving this forward, since it was posted so late last night. |

Don't miss out - (copying here FYI)Many of the forum members and visitors, tend to follow one particular nest more than the others or like me at work - sometimes only have an opportunity to observe one during the day, etc. If you aren't familiar with or haven't recently saved the links to the other nests we can observe online and follow, you can go to IWS Eagle Forum or IWS.org for the most recent links: IWS Eagle Forum - Cam Link Page From time to time, Dr. Sharpe may upgrade or have to change a link (although not recently) and these are the two sights that would have the most current links. Both nests have a running live feed on UStream or as the case may be, they also have a slo motion feed that refreshes every 5 seconds. Thanks all! |
