Gosh, the PH nest just breaks my heart, so empty.
Such joy a week ago, and such sadness. I hope they continue to use the PH nest next year. They've had success in the past, Cruz, Limuw, Skye and Spirit. Although we know sweet Cruz and Spirit are still loving their beautiful island. :soar: Just thinking out loud.

Kris - Thank you for your concerns. They are in separate cages, and Mikko isn't allowed in the dove's cage. I definately would not want anything to happen. (The photo just happened - Mikko flew in and my camera was at hand) I just got a referral to a university outreach animal rescue/rehab fairly close by. I wanted to get the little one feeling better before I called. Will probably do that today or tomorrow to find out what they would do with it. The continuing problem I am seeing is that it will not take the initiative to eat or drink (since it can't see the food). I think that would be a problem and we are frequently away most of the day, so I can't see making it wait that long for food.

Looks like rebooting my computer while I was at lunch did the trick, I can see the mama hummer now. And my computer is moving much faster now. Must be it didn't want to wake up after a long weekend. |

Marti, sweet little thing. I hope you can get him/her to a facility who can help with the eye and eating. So great you rescued the sweet little thing. |

We are not the only ones who have started out the nesting season with a tragedy....
![]() Images and comments by Lisa on CMNH Falcon Cam forum - 2009 Sandy Ridge Eagles This pair has been in this area since 1998. This is the second nest they have had on this property. The first nest was built in a cottonwood tree that is just down the woodlot from the existing nest. They used that nest through nesting in 2005. They moved to the current nest in 2006. In all the time that I have watched them, it has appeared to be the same female, but the male we currently have replaced the old male in 2006. This male is banded, US fish and wildlife silver band on the right leg and red ohio band on the left leg. I don't have the numbers on the bands and I have many pictures of the legs, but the bands are old and dirty and I have not been able to decipher any numbers. The female is unbanded. In 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2003 they fledged two young. In 2001, 2004 and 2005 they raised one eaglet and in 2000 and 2008 their nest failed. Posted on Sat. April 11th I am so sad to report that the female from the Sandy Ridge nest has gone missing. Everything had seemed to be going fine and I had witnessed eaglet feeding starting on Thursday. Others, including Chris Saladin had also seen the female and male both at the nest on Thurday in the afternoon and again everything had seemed fine. On Friday when I checked on the pair, only one eagle was present and it was raining and getting late so I left for the day. None of the other monitors had seen more than one eagle here all day Friday. When I arrived this morning the same eagle was in the nest and started to call out and look to be searching for the partner eagle. After watching for an extended period of time, it became apparent that this eagle had been alone without relief all day Friday and Saturday. When the eagle flew from the nest to search for the partner we could see the bands and realized it was the male eagle looking for the female. We waited all day and even brought some fish out to the field in case the male would take the food he needed to feed himself and the eaglets. By this evening when we left he had not taken the fish and the female eagle remained missing. I fear that this may mean our female is either dead or badly injured somewhere. It is verly likely that this male will not be able to successfully raise the eaglet(s) and this nest will fail. The female here was an older eagle and had many successful nesting cycles here. I am still so very sad to see this happen this way. Posted on Sun. April 12th It's over. The male eagle finally gave up this afternoon. He lasted alone longer than I expected he would. He was on the nest this morning up until about 1:00 in the afternoon. He started to leave the nest for short periods and return and finally around 2:30 in the afternoon he left and hadn't returned for over an hour and a half. Then he stayed for a short time and left again and hasn't come back. It's very sad, but I hope he will find a new mate and stay in the area. I'd hate to lose track of him. Posted Mom. April 13th There is good news of a sort here. We got a phone call last night from a woman who had an injured eagle in her back yard. We went there and the eagle had made its way into the south end of Sandy Ridge marsh where there is restricted access. We had a search light and tried looking back there into the marsh from the neighboring property, but could not locate the eagle. I went to Sandy Ridge first thing this morning and looked all over the marsh for the eagle. I didn't find her, but later in the day the park manager actually sort of stumbled onto her under a tree in the backside of the marsh. The eagle flew out of the marsh and into a yard into a tree. I found her again in this yard and watched her until after dark. She apparently has an injury to one of her legs and she really seems disoriented and out of sorts but at least she can fly. We won't be able to do anything for her unless she comes down to where we can get to her. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can have a good turn out here and at least we know where she is. I cannot find out any more information right now but will update as soon as I know what happens here. |

More info now on the Sandy Ridge female.... Posted by Marilyn & Doug on Tue Apr 14 2009, 08:52AM I just spoke with one of the rangers of Sandy Ridge. They feel that the female eagle has been injured by another animal in her hunt for food. Because of her age (at least 13 they say)..her body wouldn't fight off an infection. Unless she is on the ground within the park property..they can't catch her. If they DID, she still might not survive were his exact words. I asked about climbing the tree to see about the eaglets----they are not allowed as it isn't park property where the nesting tree is located. Basically, the park rangers have said "this is all part of nature". The male was NOT seen in the park area this morning. Posted by Lisa on Tue Apr 14 2009, 10:41AM Laura Jordan was with us this morning. Division of wildlife and all of North Ridgeville helped in an attempt to capture this eagle, but she can still fly and managed to get away from us. The Mayor, assistant fire chief and police all helped and continue to offer their support. We just have to hope she either recovers on her own or that she gets to the point where we can get her. |
