Many of you already know that this was not the best of weeks out on the Northern Channel Islands.

This week, Amanda and I were both on Santa Cruz Island while Rosanne was on Santa Rosa Island. We were hoping that this week we could report good news after the first chick was reported dead last week. Unfortunately, we too found out the bad news about the second chick after a day working in the field searching for other eagles. Unfortunately, we will not be able to find out the cause of death for these two chicks and leave this as one of those mysteries of nature, and wish the best of luck to K-10 and K-26 for their next breeding season.

We are still waiting to see if the egg in the Santa Rosa nest will hatch this coming weekend. If not, Cedrick will be heading out there to try and collect the egg to see if we can figure out what happened. Rosanne was busy searching for other eagle nests as well on Santa Rosa Island, but no new nests were found.

On Santa Cruz, Amanda and I had two good boat days where we were able to get in the water and head to both the Cueva Valdez territory and Yellowbanks. We found both adults together in their respective territories, indicating that neither had an active nest. A-11 and A-21 at Yellowbanks, must have caught a fish just before we got there because we observed them eating something when perched on the bluffs.

On our way back from Cueva Valdez to Prisoner's Harbor, we observed a 3 year old eagle flying out over the ocean near Fry's Harbor. We couldn't read the tags, but saw that it had a GPS antenna backpack on. GPS data indicated that the bird we saw could have been either A-58 or A-48. Both birds were in the area at the time we saw the eagle flying over the ocean.

Amanda and I also headed out to A-17 and K-11's territory one day looking for those eagles and a possible nest. No nest was found, but we did get a glimpse of A-17 flying over the Sierra Blancas followed by another orange-tagged juvenile, perhaps K-67. A-17 seems to like those orange-tagged birds!

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any news regarding new nests on the Northern Islands, if we find any, however it's looking like we may not have any new nests. This may free up time for us to start trying to trap more eagles to place transmitters on birds we believe may nest next year like the Willows and Fraser Point eagles.

Stephanie, Amanda, and Rosanne thank you so much. My heart is broken over the loss of K26 & K10's chicks. Breaks my heart. Is K67 Miracle or Surprise from the West End Nest, 2008? I sure hope so! Thank you for the work you do, and my condolences to you too about our PH chicks. You guys are an eagle's best friends!

Thanks, crew, for your report today. Like everyone else, I am heartbroken over the loss of the PH chicks. :'( I know it's part of nature, but still hard to accept. I've been watching for about a year and really got attached to that nest. Hope for better luck on this nest next year.

Thanks for all your hard work! :)^

Thank you for sharing update info - lots of eagles and of course always the hope for nests/pairs! Certainly wishing you all lots of success in this year's attempt to trap the eagles - hoping they'll be much more cooperative that in the past! :<:: A busy season indeed - thanks for taking us along!

Dear Stephanie,

Thanks for the report. You all must have been as heartbroken as we were that the PH chicks did not make it.

Hope Santa Rosa hatches its egg. Is there any chance of nests appearing on Anacapa in the future?

I also hope that you guys have better luck trapping this year than last... I think those eagles had the game figured out and "played possum." :<::

Thanks for the great report and lovely pictures! I look forward to Wednesdays and the news from the islands.

STEPHANIE, AMANDA AND ROSANNE---Thank you for all the terrific photos you captured of the eagles in their respective territories---they always look so majestic and IN CHARGE of their area.

Love the pics you got of the Juvies flying--they have such beautiful coloration--on with the gull in the picture looked to be getting a nice white tail coloration.

K10 & K26 such heartbreak for their nest this season. I hope you all continue to see the pair in and around their territory the rest of the summer and into the fall. I guess we will have to wait and see how their nesting story continues and if they keep the same nest for next season or even if they stay together---any thing can happen in Nature, as we all know.

You all have such a huge area to cover with the different Islands---take care and thank you for your informative, interesting UPDATES each week :><:

Stephanie, Amanda, and Rosanne... Thank your for all the hard work and for sharing your report. I realize that the survival of our bald eagles affects us as human beings, and they contribute so much to teach us. They are like Mother Nature's interpreters. We just need to know to listen to their message regarding our own survival as the human species. :^: :soar:
