Eaglepedia Revisited May 27, 2008 And just what will the young ealges do for their first several weeks of life? Everything is new and interesting so they will be learning and watching. They will learn eagle behavior from their parents - what foods to eat, how to catch their food, what vocalizations and expressions mean to each other and to other species of wildlife. They will learn what predators are and where they fit into the food chain. They will learn how to fly, how to lift off and how to land, how to turn and what they can do with their talons. They will exercise their wings, they will preen their feathers. And occasionally, they will have little tiffs with their siblings in the nest. Dr. Sharpe's observation - [/big]
http://www.wilsonbridge.com/ea-WilEagles.htm ![]() ![]() AND May 10, 2007 At the age of 3 weeks, the eaglet will be about 1 ft. high with very large feet and beaks (almost the size of mom/dad). At 4-5 weeks of age, they are able to stand and will begin to tear at the food delivered to the nest. By now it has its secondary coat of gray down and soon the black juvenile feathers will begin to grow in. Down feathers are great insulators but make flight impossible. The eaglet is now 6 weeks old and nearly as big as the parents and at 8 weeks, the appetites of the nestling is at its greatest. Parents will spend nearly all their time hunting for food for the chicks who are back at the nest, spreading and stretching their wings, facing into the winds and maybe even lifting off for a brief period. <a href='http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html' target='_blank'>http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html</a> ![]() (click on image for larger photo) AND April 21, 2007 In a few short weeks, the nestlings have grown quite big with feathers just beginning to push through their down. Beaks, heads and feet are changing and they begin to look more and more like their parents. The will try to stand on their wobbly legs but fall into a downy heap, trying again and again! Development: Eye shield - the eybrow that grows over the eye socket, creating the classic eagle scowl. The beak develops a hooked, sharp point. The toes develop long, hooked, sharp claws called talons. ![]() Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Don't miss out - (copying here FYI)Many of the forum members and visitors, tend to follow one particular nest more than the others or like me at work - sometimes only have an opportunity to observe one during the day, etc. If you aren't familiar with or haven't recently saved the links to the other nests we can observe online and follow, you can go to IWS Eagle Forum or IWS.org for the most recent links: IWS Eagle Forum - Cam Link Page From time to time, Dr. Sharpe may upgrade or have to change a link (although not recently) and these are the two sights that would have the most current links. Both nests have a running live feed on UStream or as the case may be, they also have a slo motion feed that refreshes every 5 seconds. Thanks all! |

Good morning, Deb. Hope you are feeling better. I loved the cleaning poem. Sounds like me lately. Yahoo! Sunny and warming up today! Sorry to read about another bird stealing Phoebe’s eggs from the nest. Good news from Steffani in the Catalina update. Wow! Eight chicks hatching naturally on five nests! I just read the Blackwater Eagle Cam web log and the twins are six weeks old and have started exercising their wings already! Lots of info about feather development and more pictures here.![]() http://friendsofblackwater.org/wordpress/eagle09/ |

Good morning, everybody. Carole, your Eagleland photos are such a wonderful archive of the growth stages of the eaglets at the various nests. Thank you so much for doing this every day. .... and I think your Photobucket account must be getting extremely full ....... Deb, hope today finds you feeling better. In a way it's nice just to be able to stay home sick, then you can watch the nests more. Enjoy your day, everyone. |
