Eaglepedia Revisited May 9, 2008 The eaglet's fluffy down begins to change into feathers. The eagles can't fly successfully until their feathers have completely grown in. First flights can be dangerous. New flight feathers can be seen coming in when the eaglet is stretching his wings, but he is still just fuzz underneath. Black juvenile feathers begin to grow in to enable the juvenile eagle to fly. While downy feathers are excellent insulators, they are useless as air foils, and must be replaced with juvenile feathers before an eaglet can take its first flight, some 10 to 13 weeks after hatching. ![]() http://www.inhf.org/eaglediaries04-may.htm AND May 26, 2008 Nearly 50 percent of young eagles don't survive their first year. Some young are killed while still in the nest by older, more dominant siblings. This is called obligate siblicide. Why this occurs is hard to determine and may be related to the availability or lack of food or may simply be that the older sibling is innately more aggressive. Cold, wet weather in early spring rob the young birds of heat and energy, leaving them too weak to eat. They slowly die due to hypothermia and malnutrition, usually occuring within a few days after hatching. Leaving the nest is another critical time for young eagles. Many are killed due to injuries sustained while learning to fly. Young ealges have been found wedged between branches, caught in power lines or hit by cars. Happy Friday Off tonight for lazy weekend with DH. Hope to make the Outlet mall before Boccali's dinner. Maybe get some fishin' in. Maybe just sleep in. Who knows. Just going for a drive, nothing really set in stone except Boccali's. Still have relatives at my house. Don't have any idea when their leaving. This has been a busy week off. I can't say that I've gotten much rest. Peetie - Cool looking kennel for your kitties Harpo - Sorry you not feeling up to par. Try and get some rest. Have a great weekend all, and safe driving for those going out of town. |
