I'll chime in on AI. Adam is obviously the best one, but he's been performing on Broadway and elsewhere for several years and has his pro 'chops' down! Ed and I saw him a few years ago at the Kodak Theatre in a production of The Ten Commandments starring Val Kilmer. He played Joshua and was so good that Ed remembered and recognized him on Idol. He most recently was touring with 'Wicked', and it seems like he has a huge, and unfair advantage over all the home town kids trying to get a break in Hollywood. IMHO. I like Allison and hope she wins. She just needs to chose songs well. Also a lot of 'un-Idol-like pics of him are circulating on the net, making him seem less 'G-Rated' than the standard contestant.

Very sad news about the Colorado nest. Thanks for the info on what "might have happened," Cheryl. Four eagles gone -- Parent and chicks. |

Oh no! A parent was lost too?? As if the loss of the three chicks weren't tragic enough. This has been a horribly sad couple of weeks for Eagles and the people who love them.

I like Goeke and Allison too .... I agree - Adam has been around doing the broadway and this Idol activity won't hurt him at all - let an unknown have a real shot .... although many times, the non-winner does better than the winner! |

Well, I am going to call it a night. I may be shooting eagles locally tomorrow if everything works out with a trip to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. Hopefully the resident first time nesting eagles are incubating or brooding and havent had a bad year If the view is good and my lenses give me the right range, i may have some shots tomorrow nightnytol

Before crashing for hte night here is a post regarding the norfolk triplets! MONDAY APRIL 20 will be "BANDING DAY" from the vdgif website: “Banding” The eaglets at the Norfolk Botanical Garden will be banded by biologists from the College of William & Mary's Center for Conservation Biology at approximatley 1:00pm on Monday April 20th. The chicks will be removed from the nest by climbers from Nuckols Tree Care and old Dominion University who regularly volunteer to assist with managment of the eagles at this nest. Biologists on the ground will measure and weigh the birds. At this age the measurement should reveal the gender of the birds. The timing for the banding is important. The young must be large enough that the bands will remain securely on their leg and young enough to be fairly docile. Once removed from the nest the young will be measured, weighed and banded. A small blood sample will be taken along with a single feather to collect a genetic sample. The young will be returned to the nest none the worse for wear. During the procedure the adults will circle overhead, keeping a close watch on the proceedings. Shortly after the young are back in the nest the adults will resume their parental duties. Banding allows scientists to collect information about wild birds such as: dispersal and migration, behavior and social structure, life-span and survival rate, reproductive success and population growth. Each band carries a unique numeric code that is reported to the Bird Banding Laboratory at the United States Geologic Survey’s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. The public can report sightings of banded birds at http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/homepage/call800.cfm. Bald eagles are banded with a riveted metal band to prevent the birds from removing the band. The band will last throughout the bird’s lifetime. |

This week our theme at school has been Wildlife/Animals. So on Wed. I talked to my kindergarteners about bald eagles and I showed them many pics of our wonderful eagles all over the country. We talked about the nests and yes, I even told them about the PH chicks that didn't make it. We talked about size, color, the nests, and many other things. Then I gave them a blank piece of paper and some colored pencils and asked them to draw bald eagles. They could be anything about bald eagles... in the nest, catching fish, whatever as long as there was at least one bald eagle in the picture. This is my favorite of the 9 kinders that drew pics. Color is not right but when I asked him why his eagles were red and green he said he liked those colors  I encourage them to do what THEY want no matter what the things might really be like. Free reign of their own imaginations. But look at the details. The adult has a fish in its mouth, the nest is high up and near water, the eaglets are calling for the adult and one eaglet is learning to fly! I am so impressed! Yes, this was done by a kindergartener! This little boy is also very smart and really listens. You can ask him questions and he will have the answer and sometimes goes into detail. Future biologist? You never know!![]() And all this week, there has been a mourning dove in my front yard when I came home for my lunch break. Not sure if its the same dove but the first time I heard it I was already inside the house and it sounded really close so I went to open the front door and it flew out from the little alcove by the front door. It flew up to the tree down by the street so I got some pics of it. It was there yesterday and today, also. I'm wondering if there might be a nest somewhere close by. ![]() |
