Ewango update translated (thanks Robin)

3/09 - In 2 to 3 months, Ewango will be separated from his mother. Ewango is very friendly and nice like other okapi and he nurses and takes food from the hand.

Okapi (Okapia Johnston) is one of the nejpodivnějším and nejtajemnějším animals that inhabit our planet. For the first time, mentions the existence of the English journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who heard about it from the indigenous pygmy on their travels in the Congo tropical rainforests Ituri in 1888 to 1890. Pet pruhovanými with rear limbs was considered sort of an unknown type of horses or zebras.

In 1899 the biologist and later gave Ugandan Governor Sir Henry Johnson verify this report. From pygmy who called animal o'api, acquired pieces of hides and skulls. This is strikingly similar to the shape of Tertiary giraffe Samotherium boissieri from the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea. Males have little horns on their heads the same as the okapi, females were hornless. The discovery was totally surprising - not only to the end of the 19th century discoveries of large animals are rare enough, but if the only known resident giraffe was open plains, rather than dark and humid tropical forests. Skull clear evidence that this is not a horse, but the primaeval giraffe.

4/09 - Ewango spends sunny days in the outside enclosure with his mother.

(from other sources - general info -

The bizarre Okapi is a primitive giraffe, about the size of a horse, found in a small region of rainforest in Zaire bordered by the Ituri, Uele, and Zaire rivers. It has striped legs like a zebra to help it blend into the shadows of the forest and a long neck to reach leaves above the floor. The Okapi is solitary or lives in pairs and feeds on foliage that is shunned by other forest creatures. The Okapi was only discovered by Western science in 1899 and less than 10,000 individuals exist today.)

:}^ George, your phrases are rubbing off on me! :D The first thought I had when I saw Ian's squirrel photo last night was "tack sharp". :)^ I thought it was a great shot.... and those little buggers NEVER stop moving! Just getting a squirrel in the picture is an accomplishment. The fur looked so real, I wanted to reach out and pet it.

Eaglepedia Revisited

January 23, 2007

Eaglets at birth and the first couple weeks, are covered with fluffy gray down but by the third week, a woolier and darker down plumage emerges. It is short-lived because a week or so later, the chick will begin to spourt its juvenile colors of dark brown, a mottled plumage until adulthood when the white tail and head will appear! The feathers grow rapidly on the back, breast, shoulders and the wings. His beak burns a bluish black and the talons will turn black with bright yellow feet.

AND

January 24, 2007

The eaglets will begin to flap their down covered wings, flopping about the nest. Their new feathers will begin to appear with the youngsters learning the art of preening. The early down litters the nest and floats away in the wind! Only a few weeks later, the chicks will begin to perch on the edge of the nest, hopping about, playing with the twigs and other items in the nest. By 10-14 weeks of age, they have most of their adult wing and tail feathers and physically are ready to leave the nest - fledge! Each eaglet will fledge when the time is right for them - males usually are ready a few days before females with single nestlings usually fledging more rapidly than ones with siblings.

AND

April 22, 2007

At 5 weeks of age, the eaglet's down is now covered by feathers and they are strong enough to stand and will begin to feed themselves. Soon only a few tufts of down will show through the growing feathers. They continue to grow bigger and stronger but still need the watchful eye of the parents to protect and care for them. Young eagles visiting the area would not be welcome at the nest (even Cruz) - the nestlings' mother and father would scream and fly after the young eagle and chase it away.

4 week old chick (not any of ours)

AND

Raven is the common name given to several large black birds of the genus Corvus. Other birds in the same genus are the smaller crows, jackdaws, and rooks. They are known for their intelligence and are perhaps the smartest birds. There are many observations in the threads of ravens harrassing all the nests - several of the members have posted photos/videos of the "attacks" - besides weather and lack of food - they would be the thing I worry most about as a threat to the chicks. Apparently they come in a large group to draw the parents off the nest so they can then approach the nest! Some members who have visited the area witnessed how many Ravens were in the area!
