Hi all, I am glad to report that all 8 Catalina chicks are doing wonderfully! Pinnacle Rock – 1 chick Seal Rocks – 1 chick Twin Rocks – 2 chicks West End – 2 chicks Two Harbors – 2 chicks Here is a short video of the Pinnacle Rocks chick getting fed by its parents. ![]() We have experienced a couple of exceptionally hot days. Here are a couple of pictures of the dedicated eagle parents that so diligently provide shade to their young chicks. This is the Seal Rocks male K25 ![]() This is one of the Twin Rocks adults ![]() The captive eagles don’t really eat much when it’s that hot. We prefer not to handle Pee’ ech either, we just leave them alone in the shaded perches unless they really show interest in the food offer. I like to spray some water on them to cool them off a little; Pimu loves the water for as long as I’m misting her, Pee’ ech not so much, it only takes a few seconds before she moves away from the misted area. Here’s a video of Pimu eating a large mouth bass on Friday. ![]() On the next feeding I offered her pork but didn’t show an interest so I thawed out some venison and she went for that. Yesterday I fed the birds in the late afternoon after it cooled down and while I was feeding Pee’ ech a quail, I noticed Pimu was looking at it very intently. After I put Pee’ ech back on her perch I took the left over quail and showed it to Pimu. She was so intrigued by it; she looked at it from all angles. She flew to a couple other perches and even looked at it from the ground. She finally got to it and had fun (I presume) eating it. She likes variety in her diet; she is just a little ‘choosy’ when it comes to her food and she is lucky enough to have us to spoil her by meeting her demands. In other news, I have gotten K00 signal from a couple different places so he is still moving around exploring the island. K63 (the 2006 Two Harbors chick), was spotted at Nacimiento Lake in Paso Robles, California by Dave and Patricia Davis. They also took a picture and sent it to us. ![]() It’s always nice to hear our birds are out there doing well and exploring the world. This week we also worked on putting up a new sign for the aviary. Nancee Wells, our membership coordinator, brought us a beautiful Eagle Aviary sign along with the names of those who have “adopted” Pimu so far this year. Pete putting up the sign ![]() Pete and Nancee ![]() We placed the sign and the name of the sponsors right across from the informative posters and above our donation box in our observation area. ![]() A closer look ![]() If you would like to find out more about how to help the wild and captive eagles, visit us at http://s11.zetaboards.com/IWS_Eagle_Forum/index/ Until next week, Steffani |

Dear Steffani, I think I enjoyed watching Pimu have her "sushi" as much as she enjoyed eating it! I'd love to see her getting misted sometime, if possible. Glad she liked the quail. I give quail to my cats and they are all fans of it. And there is good news about K-63, too. Glad to know all the chicks are thriving. After the sadness from PH, it's nice to see the rest of the families doing well. Thanks for a great update. Lauri |

Thanks Steffani for another wonderful report. It was very exciting to watch the video of PR parents feeding their tiny baby. I always love seeing any pictures I can of the SR pair. Keep them coming! If they had stayed on the old nest they wouldn't have had to worry so much about shade, silly eagles! These guys will do anything they can to make it challenging for the IWS crew it seems lol! Have a safe and, hopefully, cooler week! |

STEFFANI Big Thank you to David and Patricia Davis for their great photo of K63--and --Oh My----he is sooo handsome! K00 alive and well and still on the Island--great news! The best news is always when you get your readings and reports from elsewhere-- that many of the juvies of the Islands are thriving and beating the 50% odds. Thank you for the pictures and videos of SR,PR and TR--hot for the eagles but a whole lot hotter for you hiking and climbing to do your observations. WHEW! You are a real trooper always and even more so when one of these recent heat waves hit. Thank goodness for you and all the IWS "troopers extraordinare" now have our prevailing cooler weather back again. |
