This week on the northern islands was unexpectedly one of the best weeks for eagle sightings. We were all so shocked as to how many eagles we were observing while on Santa Cruz Island. Amanda, Rosanne, Dave and I started the week out with a sighting of six eagles in one day! We headed out on the boat towards the Cueva Valdez area of Santa Cruz Island. On the way there, before we had even left Prisoner's we got a glimpse of both K-10 and K-26 perched in the trees. ![]() We then continued on and found both A-00 and A-16 perched along the cliffs at Cueva Valdez. Both birds were perched together for over an hour and were vocalizing as they were being harassed by ravens. ![]() ![]() On the return to Prisoner's we surveyed along the coast and found two other eagles in Fry's Harbor. One was identified as A-46 and the other was A-57. A-46 at Fry's Harbor ![]() A-57 at Fry's Harbor ![]() ![]() Amanda, Rosanne, and I headed out on the boat again the next day towards the Yellowbanks area of Santa Cruz Island to see if we could find out what A-11 and A-21 were up to. We saw both adults perched along the cliffs for 15 minutes, when they decided to then take off to West Anacapa Island. Looking for eagles at Yellowbanks: ![]() West Anacapa Island ![]() While we were there, we also saw another adult eagle that GPS data indicated was A-29. We're hoping that next year he will find a mate and breed on the island. ![]() ![]() While the three of us were on the boat, Dave reported seeing both A-02 and A-28 at Christy Beach, so it appears as if they will not lay another egg this year. Later in the week, we headed to other territories to search for some of the pairs and found lots of eagles. At Fraser point, both adult eagles were spotted. We were able to get some photos of the eagles expanding their diet beyond just fish by consuming a cormorant out at Fraser point. A-24 eating lunch ![]() Flying away from the ravens with her meal ![]() The male also flying away from the ravens ![]() Amanda spotted two juvenile orange-tagged eagles flying around the southwest coast, so we'll be doing a lot of telemetry in hopes we might be able to figure out who those two eagles are. We headed out on the boat later in the week in hopes of finding more eagles. However, the weather was not great, so we were only able to survey Chinese Harbor, where we found one of the Pelican Harbor eagles. We couldn't get close enough to read a tag, but it was being very vocal as it was getting harassed by a raven. ![]() In other news, Cedrick was out on Santa Rosa Island for the weekend, and entered the Trap Canyon nest so that he could recover the egg with the help of Nick Todd, a local raptor biologist. He observed the eagles who were still sitting on the egg for a few hours each day, but it just didn't hatch. We wanted to collect the egg before ravens got to it, so that we might be able to send it to a lab for analysis. Climbing down to the nest ![]() A-08 flying near the nest Cedrick, Suzanne, and Dave should have more news to report after this week. Stephanie, Amanda, Rosanne, and Dave |

Thank you all so much for a fabulous report. Fry's harbor is one of my favorite anchorages. K26 & K10 are so beautiful in the tree near Prisoners. Just good news all around. So sorry about having to retrieve the unsuccessful egg. You make Wednesday's the best day of the week!
