So this week was a very exciting and different week for me. As some of you may know already, Steffani went on vacation to visit her family in Ecuador. I came down from Santa Cruz Island to sit in for her on Catalina. It was a nice change to be down here and help out checking some of the nests. I visited the Seal Rocks nest several days this week and found the chick doing well and steadily increasing in size. ![]() I took a short video of both adults at the nest with the chick. Unfortunately for me, I think I had been seen by the eagles, which is why they were flying around, so I took off after I made sure the chick was moving around the nest. ![]() At the Pinnacle Rock nest, the chick is also doing well and I was able to spot him moving about the nest as well. ![]() ![]() I also spent some time looking for the Middle Ranch birds and trying to catch fish for Pimu. I found them pretty frequently every time I drove past the reservoir, at least A-32. Here is a photo of both adults together eating a fish. ![]() One day, Peter and I headed out to the Twin Rocks nest to work on the camera and to confirm how many chicks were in the nest. Well our mission was successful. Camera is fixed and we were able to confirm two chicks in the nest. However, the camera may not be online for awhile, but we will be able to check on the nest a lot more efficiently from the island. Pete fixing the camera ![]() Hiking back up the hill . . . ![]() K-33 and the two chicks ![]() We took some video of the chicks while working on the camera. . . ![]() Cont. . . |

Pimu and Pe-ech are also doing well. It took them some time to adjust to the newbie that was feeding them, but after a couple days they were comfortable enough to let me feed them. ![]() ![]() That's it for this week. Steph |

Stephanie, looks like you had a great experience taking a turn at helping with the Catalina eagles. It's so nice to be able to see the photos of the TR eaglets as well as all the others. Thank you! |

STEPHANIE--So glad you are spending some time on Catalina and getting to know these Eagle pairs and their chicks. Your videos are great---I always love see in TR and happy to see those twins doing so well. How fun for you too to spend time with Heidi and Pimu and isn't it great that they are so sociable too. You obviously speak their language --as they have taken to you and know you are definitely "Friend". Enjoy your stay there on the Island.

Stephanie, Thanks for the update . I loved seeing the chick on Seal Rocks. Even though the parents relocated that nest this year, I couldn't help but think about adorable Gulliver from last season, remembering his loud, persistent, distinct whining for his parents, and how he would grab food from them and then almost attack them to get them off the nest!!! He was so cute!!Thanks for taking care of Catalina! Cristine |
