Northern Channel Islands Update May 5 – 12 Hi Everyone, Well, Stephanie was on Catalina this week, so it was just me and Rosanne holding down the fort on Santa Cruz. In addition to finding eagles, we also had the opportunity to help out with the loggerhead shrike surveys being done on Saturday and Sunday! The week started off slow as we were looking for the Willows Anchorage Pair on Wednesday, but couldn’t find them. On Thursday Rosanne headed out to look for the Sauces Pair, A02 and A28, and found them sitting together on their favorite bluff overlooking the ocean. They took a couple short flights together and Rosanne also witnessed a copulation. I headed out to Fraser Point to try to find our West End Pair, A24 and A40, but only saw A24 hanging around Fraser by herself all day. We went searching for the Willows pair again with no luck, but I did find A51 perching on the rocks over the ocean in Willows Anchorage. ![]() ![]() Our weekend was dedicated to searching for shrikes, but we were able to get a great visual of A24 and A40 sitting together on the cross that stands on the very west end of Fraser. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a good photo since it was so foggy, and we were too far away and actually supposed to be looking for shrikes! We got lucky and found five loggerhead shrikes in one of our 900+ acre plots, which we were so excited about because there were only 10 shrikes found total all week on Santa Cruz! I guess they like that West End Habitat. After we were done searching for shrikes, we turned our attention back to our birds and took out the boat for some serious eagle searching. We found A00 and A16 in their usual Cueva territory, and also saw K10 perched all by his lonesome in a snag in Chinese Harbor. Thanks to our Fox Tech Friend Hower, who has a nice camera and came on the boat with us, we got some good shots of these birds! ![]() ![]() ![]() That’s all from Santa Cruz for this week, next tour, we will be on Catalina banding the chicks! Exciting! --Amanda and Rosanne |

Hmm maybe that explains the visit by 28 to the PH nest? since he and his partner have been frisky?? They may like the neighborhood if 10 and 26 doesnt run the happy couple off |

Thank you for the variety of information, Amanda and Rosanne! I am learning more about A-24 and A-40 with each update. It's also great to find out more about the daily lives and favourite hang-outs for the more familiar eagles such as K-10. Well done on the photos, too! |
