Hi everyone, This tour we had some interesting Bald Eagle sightings on Santa Cruz Island. We were unable to find any nests, but we were able to locate the Willow’s pair, which has been very elusive. Good weather permitted us to circumnavigate Santa Cruz Island twice this tour, and that is without a doubt the best way to locate lots of Bald Eagles. Probably the highlight of both the boat surveys was finding the west end pair perched on the Santa Cruz Island cross on Fraser Point. ![]() Amanda and Rosanne had gotten a visual of both of them on the cross, but could not get a photograph because of the dense fog. David Suzanne and I saw one on the cross and the other perched just below. ![]() ![]() We found the Cueva Valdez pair on both surveys. On one day they were perched together facing each other like a cute couple. We had some bait fish that we put into the water and the male A-00 went down twice for fish. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After catching the fish he flew into a tree and eat them. The second tour revealed A-00 perched low over the water and I was able to get this photograph. ![]() Conitnued.... |

While surveying for the Cueva Valdez Pair we spotted a sub adult BAEA catching thermals along the cliffs, flying out over the ocean to ring up in other thermals then disappear over the mountains. We could not identify this bird by its tags but it looks like it might have been A-46 who flew over this part of SCI on that day according to the GPS data we downloaded.![]() ![]() As we passed Christie Beach, we found the Sauces pair and both the adults perched apart several hundred meters from each other. Interestingly, one of them was an unknown sub-adult BAEA. This is a photograph of one of the Sauces pair with an unknown sub adult BAEA. ![]() Not to far away was the other BAEA adult of the Sauces pair. ![]() We were able to find the Malva Real male K-10 perched near the old ground nest. He flew off and I was unable to take a picture. Then near Willow’s Anchorage we found the Willow’s pair. They were both perched in different locations and I got a photograph of one of the adults. ![]() ![]() Later that day we also saw the Pelican Harbor pair together feeding on a seal carcass. When we approached they both flew away and I did not get a photograph. This tour was David Roth’s last days as a seasonal Bald Eagle technician with IWS and I would like to thank him for his hard work, enthusiasm and ability to adapt his work ethic to the varied day to day tasks that presented themselves this season. He will be leaving to Louisville Kentucky, where he will be starting his studies to become a middle school science teacher. Good luck with your new career change and we hope you can use the Channel Islands Bald Eagle web cams as a tool to teach your students. Next tour Stephanie and Amanda will be on Catalina for a few days and then finish their tour on Santa Cruz Island. Happy eagling. Northern Channel Islands Crew, Cedrick, Suzanne and Dave |

Thank you to the IWS crew for this great report. Looks like so much fun, with lots of hard work to be filming and checking on the eagles. What a good feeling it must give you when you see these eagles. Beautiful scenery and great captures. To David Roth...Good luck in teaching middle schoolers. They are quite inquisitive and willing to learn. I am a teaching assistant in our elementary school and the children love when I show them the eagle cams and reports. Thank you again for all the great work all the IWS crew does...stay safe!

Terrific UPDATE---very interesting photos too and happiness always when the eagles "let" you photo them Best of Luck to you DAVID ROTH as you move on to a new career. Your experiences with the IWS Crew on the Channel Islands will greatly add to your teachings in your chosen field in Science. When you put the IWS Cams up and running in your classroom, someday, you will be able to share even more insight with your pupils and I am sure will rekindle fond personal memories for you as well

Thanks so much for your fabulous update! I'm really glad K10 & K26 are still the adorable couple they've always been. I was worried after two years of 'failed' nests, as Peter says cause they didn't fledge, and the sadness of this years two chicks. Could A46 be the sub-adult that attacked Skye and Spirit last year? I know we may never know, but I just wondered. Thanks for doing all you guys do! Wishing you all the best in your new career David. |

Thank you for those great pics of the eagles going about their daily lives. I especially liked the ones of A00 fishing (his wing blings looked like a child's water wings in one) and the seagull harrassment shots ![]() Best of luck in your new career path David. I'm sure you will find that teaching is extremely rewarding and your students will enjoy your eagle adventures as you share your experiences with them Looking forward to the next update as always. Stay safe out there in land Northern Channel Islands Crew. You are all doing an incredible job
