Dr. Sharpe, do eagles establish territory as a pair, or does the male or female stake out a territory and invite a partner in? What's the approximate size of the territory, and is it typically bigger for a nesting pair?

Along these lines, if A-35 finds an untagged mate on the mainland, is it likely that they will stay there to start a nest or are they just as likely to return to one of the islands?

I think they tend to form a territory as a pair, although either bird can originally be in the general area first. On Catalina, the territories tend to be about 2-4 km of coastline. The territories remain about the same size, whether or not they are nesting in a particular year. They may not be as defensive of a territory if they are not nesting.

A-35 can breed on either the islands or the mainland. It largely depends on where she is when she finds a mate.
