Per Steffani/eaglegal in the IWS Catalina Update 6/3/09 - "And speaking about the TH nest, the big news of the week I know everyone is going to be excited about… K83, the TH chick from 2008 (aka Star) was spotted yesterday near Highway 97 in the northwest of the country. We don’t have any images but her sighting is confirmed!" I looked up Highway 97, which runs all the way from Northern CA to the Canadian border - a very large area. Is there any more specific information available? |

I asked the same question in IWS Updates Bette!
So thats a long highway, what is the nearest town? Hwy 97 starts at the town of Weed, California! and then crosses the border to Oregon then to Wash and there is a Hwy 97 through to Canada."U.S. Route 97 begins in town of Weed, California. From Weed, the highway continues in a northeasterly direction toward Klamath Falls, Oregon. The California portion of U.S. Route 97 is approximately 55 miles (89 km) in length, with its southern end at the junction with Interstate 5" So K83 must be in Washington, not northern CA, is that what you mean Steff? |

Ozzie, thanks for that info! Klamath Falls used to be a great Bald eagle gathering place, but I don't know for certain now; think it may be having some food shortage or some sort of environmental issues. Wonder if K-83/Star was/is near Klamath Falls? Pretty sure our K-10/PH nest went up to Klamath Falls for a while before he settled down with his gal on SC Island. Edit on Monday, June 8th, after Dr. Sharpe answered below---here's a kind of neat link for that area. http://www.westcoastroads.com/california/us-097_ca.html |

My brother lives in Klamath Falls, on the lake. He saw Stephen Cobert, Jr. while checkng out Oregon...he's back safe and sound on Santa Cruz Island. They cover a lot of territory. Sweet Star, I hope she pays my brother a visit in Oregon, although, he never has a camera when he sees an eagle. Star is my favorite girl.

Dr. Sharpe, my brother lives in Klamath Falls, and said he saw a juvenile eagle with what he thought was orange tags on the wings. She was soaring over the lake, and then flew over the pines on the south side of the lake. I'm not sure if this is Star, K83. He said the last location that she was seen is only 20 miles south, and there's a big bird refuge between where she was and he is. He was kayaking and didn't have a camera. |
