Hello Dr. Sharpe,
our local newspaper had this article in it yesterday.
http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2009...ome-wilderness/
about a plan to possibly designate parts of the islands as wilderness area.

"If approved, the people who may be affected the most are Park Service employees.

The network of roads on the islands that were built by cattle ranchers and previous landowners are now used extensively by park scientists as they get to different study sites where they work on projects such as fox restoration, bald eagle monitoring and invasive plant removal.

If an area is deemed wilderness, cars would no longer be allowed in those areas, and the roads would either be made into trails or removed all together.

Dave Begun, a longtime volunteer with the park, said that while a wilderness designation could make it harder for scientists and volunteers, overall it’s a positive thing."

My question is, if you are no longer allowed to use cars/trucks, and the roads will be removed or grow over, how would this effect all of you?
I know that in order to get to a lot of the nests, there is quite a lot of road travel involved.
I also know that this is a long way off yet, but I'm curious as to what you may have heard.
Thank you!

Most of our work is on Santa Cruz Island, which is owned primarily by The Nature Conservancy, so access to most of the island would be unchanged. The only place on Santa Cruz that I could see being made into wilderness would be the area around Montanon, which is already roadless. Santa Rosa would be a different situation because it is all Park Service, but I don't know where they would make wilderness there either.
