Hi everybody,

The Catalina eaglets have started to fledge!
Yesterday, many camera viewers notice K91, the oldest eaglet at the Two Harbors nest, spread her wings and with a little help from the strong winds, she took off and was out of view for a while. It is a great milestone for the developing and growing process of these young eagles and it sure is wonderful to be able to watch them take “their first steps” into the world.
Here’s a video of K91’s take off.

(Thank you all devoted camera viewers)

However, this was not the first fledge of the week; K90, the Seal Rocks chick, has been exploring the skies for about a week now. Last Thursday I went to check on him and as soon as I parked my car I spotted the SR adults who seemed to be chasing a juvenile out of their area but definitely not in an aggressive way, which puzzled me. I hiked to the observation area and I didn’t see the eaglet so I figured it must have fledged. The adults were still flying around and I could hear the eaglet somewhere but couldn’t see it. After walking around for a few minutes I watched all three birds fly together. As it turns out, the adults weren’t chasing a juvenile off, they were “escorting” their chick on what it might have been one of his first flights.
I was very happy to watch him soar and land like a pro!
I took some video and some pictures too.

Ever since, I’ve been hiking all over the place looking for the eaglet.
I circled the chick in all photos

I’ve checked him twice after that and yesterday I found him almost all the way at the bottom of the canyon.

It will be a couple of weeks before the rest of the eaglets fledge so we have to check them regularly.

In other news, yesterday I spent some time tracking down a mortality signal coming from K88, last year’s TR chick. Since it started to get late and I hadn’t found it yet I came home and Pete spent pretty much all day hiking the ridges and canyons of the area until he finally found the dropped transmitter. It is harder to find a transmitter that is not attached to a bird but it’s definitively a relief not to find a dead eagle. Lets hope K88 is doing alright somewhere out there and we get a chance to spot him soon.

Both Pimu and Pee’ ech have been doing great. They have been visited a lot lately since so many people have “adopted” them. Our aviary’s sponsors wall is sure looking great!

To get your name on the wall or adopt one of the Channel Island’s Nests go to

And the orders keep coming in…

Great Update Steffani! I felt in my heart, I'm no expert but I knew the WE kids were girls. I even said if I were in Vegas, I would bet my last cent they're girls. Darn, I wish that was a game in Vegas, I would be a big winner. I'm so glad all the kids and eagles are doing well. Our little K91 had a big day yesterday as you know. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to our eagles.

Thank you all for your continuous checking up on our kids, Steffani! Happy to hear that Pimu & Pee'ech are being showered with love too!

:}^ STEFFANI-Thrilling video of SR adults and their chick/juvie and how exciting that you were there at just right time :**:

Really happy that K88 is alive and well and the only regret is that he lost his radio pack. Glad the intrepid B-)) could find the radio--so no fear that K88 met a sad ending.

Your entire UPDATE is another WOW ! Thank you so much Steffani :><:

- Thank you so much for your updates, photos and videos. It is such a great way for all of us to be in the know of what our eaglets are up to. K-90 is sure travelling the area and looked so beautiful in flight with the adults. Thank goodness it was only a transmitter that Peter found, he must have eagle eyes too. Hopefully K-88 is soaring the skies and doing well. Thanks again, you are the best.
:Hugs:
