Hi everybody, We have been checking nests and fledglings regularly and they are all doing well. K90, the SR eaglet, continues to explore his territory and sure making us search for him. We haven’t gotten close enough to take a picture but we know he’s moving around. It will be a little longer before he leaves the nest area, which is when it’s critical to get visuals to make sure they are doing alright. K87 and K91, the Two Harbors eaglets are also exploring their surroundings but I have yet to watch one of the fly like I watched K90. Since they are moving away from the cam’s view, we visit their nest to make sure they are ok. ![]() Of course, by the time we get there, it so happens that they decide to go back to their nest where everybody can see them. ![]() K99, the Pinnacle Rock eaglet, and K94 and K94, the Twin Rocks eaglets keep exercising their wings and getting ready to take their first “steps” into the world. I hope I’m there to witness it and get some video of it. The West End eaglets, the youngest of the island, are also exercising their wings getting them ready to take them to the skies with their parents, and they sure are a couple of noisy (in a good way) birds. Both, the Reservoir pair and the Rattlesnake pair are still together. The latter pair sure gives island visitors, especially kayakers a time of their lives. I have been told many times by my friends, who give kayaking tours along the coast, that K80 and K47 show up and swoop down to catch a fish, almost every time, on cue after they are done telling the tourists the eagle story. It is so wonderful to know that this is a special place in Southern California where people can be so harmlessly close to these magnificent animals and knowing that we are part of the eagles’ success story. In other news, I have to say that Pimu sure takes the prize for surprising every one of us. Over the weekend Pete went fishing; when he got back to the cages he realized one of the fishes was still alive so he decided to put it in Pimu’s pond and see what happens. Well, apparently, she flew down, got into about a foot of water, caught the bass, killed it and ate it! I wish I’d have been there to film it all because every time I’ve placed a “not-quite-dead” fish on her platform she waited for it to die and then ate it. I’m going fishing again this evening so as soon as I catch a bass I’ll run to her cage and see if she does it again… As strange as that was, that wasn’t the BIG news for this week. Let me show you a picture and try to figure out what I mean… ![]() Many of you remember the time when Pee’ ech, our golden eagle, laid an egg and thus revealing her true identity. The speckled egg on the right is the golden’s and the one on the left is a bald eagle’s, but not any bald eagle, Pimu’s! ![]() Last week I found this eggshell at the bottom of her platform on the outside of her cage where I rarely go. One day, during the feeding, a gentleman asked me: Are they both laying eggs now? I responded, well, the golden is, Pimu has never laid one, so he showed me what he thought to be parts of eggshells and sure enough, it was a bald’s egg! Notice the difference on the outer shells… ![]() Therefore, just in case we weren’t sure of her gender, we are now. Pimu wasn’t about to let Pee’ ech get all the attention. Speaking of Pee’ ech, we were given her new name and it is spelled: Pii’ ich. (it doesn’t make training her any easier but it is what we should and will be calling her). I’ll leave you with another amazing creature found in this island ![]() IWS’ Nest Adoption Challenge had concluded. Last week we already started pulling out numbers and notifying the winners. Keep your fingers crossed and hope we draw your name! ![]() We’d like to thank all our supporters and everybody who has contributed to making our annual fundraiser so successful. Until next week, Steffani |

Wow, Steffani!! Do you suppose Pimu and Pii'ich are "bonding" with you emotionally as their mate and that is why they are laying eggs? Patti has mentioned this happening with her domesticated birds. |

Steffani, thanks for a wonderful update. So glad K80 and K47 know how to "wow the crowd". Curious that Pimu would start laying eggs I think you are right, she wants attention.

)Oh my gosh! Pimu laid an egg?? How amazing! I have heard of other birds laying unfertilized eggs so I guess why not Pimu? YAY! I guess that Pii'ich means Little Sister? She is sooooo beautiful and I so enjoyed visiting her and Pimu, too, of course! And hurray for Pimu "catching" that fish! I can't wait to see a video of her doing that! I hope you are able to get one  She'll probably be stubborn tho and won't do it knowing you are trying to film it Thanks for the wonderful update, Steffani! I so look forward to Wed. to read them.

How awesome about Pimu Maybe that has been her problem all along....she wants her fish alive in the water so she can catch them herself I'm wondering about the egg thing too If you built her a nest that she could add on to, do you think she would lay more eggs Would she try to catch the snake if it came into her enclosure????How amazing it must be to see the Rattlesnake pair diving for fish when people are kayaking nearby The Lake Casitas Four need to plan on doing that trip for sure :lol:Thanks for a truly great update Steffani

Dear Steffani, That Pimu is a little stinker, isn't she? I hope you can get to see her kill her fish in the pond. You're getting quite a collection of unfertilized eggshells from the aviary! Did you have another naming ceremony for Pii'ich? How is that pronounced? Did the elders come to the island again? Thanks for the update! /auri |

so they are both laying eggs for Steffani how wonderful - and I would agree - it's just that Pimu can't be outdone! (or is that won't) wonderful updates - as a matter of fact, Jann and I both remarked recently that we would have thought 91 would be making entrances and exits at TH if she was full on flying but of course pretty much all we see is them coming and going from the area of the camera so........ time will tell! and you will catch them - LOL thank you so much for taking us along - looking forward to the successful fledging on all the juvies of all the nests!

What a fun update today! Fishing and egg laying? Pimu sure knows how to keep the spotlight on her. That's our girl! :soar: After finally figuring out how to pronounce Pee'ech, now we have Pii'ich. So how does this one sound? Thank you Steffani, for keeping us up on the antics and achievements of our wonderful eagles! And you can just bet us wild women will be out in a kayak to see the Rattlesnake pair the next time we're on Catalina! |

What an interesting Update and thank you, Steffani. What I like is the time of year Pimu chose to lay this egg. Wild Bald eaglets are getting ready to leave their nests now. So...that is pretty interesting about her egg. Great fish story! All neat news. |

Wow Steffani, what a great update! I love that Pimu went to the pond and got the bass out and made a nice meal for herself. Eww, that rattler freaked me out, glad we didn't see it on our tour with you. I can't believe both girls are laying eggs, and thanks for sharing the pictures of them. Wishing you a great week, and thanks for all you and Peter do.

Kayaking is something I'm kind-of afraid to do, but I'll have to consider trying it if it means being able to see the Rattlesnake pair. Wonderful story about Pimu's egg. I agree, she wanted attention, too. Glad to know that all the young eaglets are doing well. Thank you for keeping your eagle eyes on them, Steffani. Good luck with the fresh fish and Pimu idea, hope it works out, but she's a diva and may not cooperate for filming.

Steff, it's interesting that Pimu would begin to lay eggs. I had wondered about that........once Pee'ech layed one I had wondered about why Pimu hadn't. There are likely all sorts of scenarios that could provide an explanation....all of them interesting. That is completely cool about Pimu "catching" her dinner. Now there's a thought......have live bass in the pond and let her go fishing for her dinner each night. It's probably very healthy for her....mentally.As for the Rattler......I don't think that's mentally healthy for anyone. Eeeekkkk!!! You be careful where you're walking young lady.
