Peppermint: I'd like to think they have bonded with me, I sure have bonded with them but not that way... I'll research this more and ask around to see how common it is for raptors to lay eggs in captivity all the sudden. We assume Pii' ich ( I guess pronounced pee eech) has just reached maturity, but Pimu has been with us for 10 years and never has she behaved this way so that's something interesting to look into. CDN-CDN: kayaking is an amazing sport. It is one of the most relaxing things you can do on the water and very safe (weather permitting of course). Ocean kayaks are very different from river ones. My mom is a bit afraid of the water too but once I got her on one she couldnt wait to do it again. And you've seen the video with my dad. To all of you who got weirded out by the snakes: I love rattlers. I am always aware that I am putting myself in their territory and always walk with a stick and I'm cautios not to step on them when I see them. They are wonderful creatures and definitely an important part of our ecosystem. We did see one in one of our IWS island tours, I believe it was with Barbara wasnt it? They loved it; I had to ask her sister to get back in the car 'cause she kept trying to take a picture with her cellphone. |

Hi Steffani--this is a remote possibility regarding Pimu's egg. I can't recall which wild male Bald eagle was seen (at least once) hanging around Pimu's enclosure, but I read about that in an Update some time ago. Maybe the search engine will help me find that Update. Other than Pimu bonding to you...which in my opinion is highly likely....could that male Bald eagle be visible to Pimu more than you and Peter are aware of? If so, I think this could stimulate Pimu to lay an egg. I got one of my lovebirds in 1995 and for years assumed "it" was a male. Maybe about 5-6 years ago, my friend gave me Rootie and Tootie, her two lovebirds that she thought were both male. Rootie started laying eggs at my place....and when my Cupid saw that, "he" started laying eggs. The cages are not even side-by-side. I have two Moustache parakeets between the cages. Go figure. Cupid has stopped laying eggs...and I'm glad, but she did for maybe 4-5 years after she began later in life. |

Found that info I was curious about through the search engine. K-78 was perched close to Pimu's enclosure on April 1, 2009 as reported in the Catalina Update: "I returned from feeding the birds a couple of hours ago and while I was cleaning Pimu’s cage she started vocalizing but I didn’t think much of it since she is very vocal all the time. I was cleaning her pond and I looked up to her perch and saw K78 perched on the outside of the cage about 4ft above Pimu. I walked slowly to the door to go get my camera from the car but he took off to the reservoir where, by the way, was not welcomed since K93 started chasing him out right away. (I wish most eagle would make it that easy to ID them). That’s all for this week, Steffani" Would be interesting to know if he's been hanging around since then and how often. The downside is K78 is not sexually mature and I'm sure she would recognize him as such. |

That must have been a real eye opener seeing that egg!! Wow! Who knew. It will be interesting to hear if you were able to find out about eagles laying unfertilized eggs. Can't wait to hear if Pimu went after more live fish! Great report Steff! Hope our little fledglings will cooperate and you will be able to get some shots of them off the nest! Thanks so much for every thing! |
