Hello, What a week we’ve had on Catalina! Almost every eaglet on the island has fledged. I have been visiting all nest areas every couple of days trying to get visuals on the young eagles. That is easier said than done! None of them have left their nest areas yet but even while they remain in their territory, it is a challenge finding them, especially when the weather doesn’t cooperate. The other day I went to check K90, the Seal Rocks eaglet, and while its radio was giving a normal signal I wasn’t able to see it because of all the fog while just a few hundred feet higher, right on the ridges it is very, very hot. ![]() Later that day I went to check on K99, the Pinnacle Rock eaglet, and I spend some time waiting for the fog to clear so I can see if she was still on her nest. ![]() Once I had a view of the nest I noticed K99 had began exploring the area surrounding the nest but it got even foggier to confirm a fledge. ![]() I returned a couple of days later and it took me a while to find K99 since she had flown to another ridge fairly close to the nest. ![]() I have a video of the intrepid bird and a graceful take off. ![]() She landed a little bit farther west. ![]() Closer ![]() I have checked the Twin Rocks eaglets several times this week only able to spot one eaglet at the time. Unfortunately, the observation location on land is too far away to read their wing markers and the water has been to rough to take the kayaks out, so it wasn’t until yesterday that I watched both juveniles flying at the same time and thus able to confirm that both have fledged! I took a video of one of the flying but I’m having problems with the camera right now so I’ll try to work on those videos for next update. ![]() Cont... |

Here’s one of the TR eaglets taking off from the TR cam transmission tower. ![]() Now perched on another location. ![]() It kept flying down closer to its parent. ![]() On Saturday, I checked the Two Harbors eaglets since they hadn’t been seen the night before or that morning. By the time I got there, of course, they had already returned to their nest where everybody can see them. When I got there and started setting up the scope, some visitors asked me what I was looking for so I told them about the project and showed them the juveniles from across the harbor. They were very appreciative and I’m sure they will add to our eaglecam watcher’s list! Speaking of which, Karen (SoCalLady) and her husband were sailing around Catalina over the weekend and spotted my truck and the people I was talking to and also took some pictures of us and the eaglets. ![]() (photo taken by SoCalLady) ![]() (photo taken by SoCalLady) ![]() (photo taken by SoCalLady) This week I’ll take a trip to the West End to find out if K98, one of the two eaglets, has officially fledged. Maybe her sibling will fledge by then too. I’ll keep you posted. Last week I also went fishing and managed to bring one live fish back to Pimu’s pond. Pimu immediately looked at it and eventually came down by the pond but at the last minute she turn a round and didn’t go for it. I waited and waited but she just looked at it so I gave her venison and she went for that. Maybe she would have preferred a bass rather than a bluegill. ![]() The fish is still in the pond since there’s plenty to eat and it would probably help keep the pool cleaner. I don’t really feel like fishing it out now so we’ll see how long it lasts in there with Pimu! Until next week, Steffani |

STEFFANI The video of K99 is super! First the "walking the stick and wingers" act and then the beautiful finale of her lift off into flight-- the lighting really showed her gorgeous colorations too!Love Pimu's video--it may be my imagination, but it looks like her flying has improved some in her short flights from platform to perches. Steff, you are as patient as your eagle buddies when it comes to taking the videos in all kinds of weather conditions , out there in their "neighborhoods" . Glad you posted THE TRUCK and we saw you go to your truck to get binoculars so the tourists could see the nest and Eaglets---we knew you were giving them a quick lesson about the Eagles---and you sure made their day! I hope to post all our pics next week--- on the Forum---this week is too hectic--so I'm glad you posted the 2 pics of the K91 & K87. ![]() Love that TR pic of the eaglet lifting off!

Thank you for the wonderful update, Steffani. Loved the video of K99 – such a magnificent bird! :soar: Karen, great shots. Pimu is looking good even if she is a fussy eater.

Dear Steffani, Oh, I enjoyed the "A Day In The Life Of Pimu" film. What a kick to just watch her flying back and forth. I hope she doesn't disappoint you and goes for the fish herself! You were right up there in the fog trying to get the Pinnacle Rock shots. I am hoping our June Gloom is over with and we'll just get the morning fogs now for the rest of the season. At least it cleared up just in time for you to get that great take-off shot. Thanks again for keeping us up-to-date on the birds and their happenings. And it was good of you to entice some new eagle-addicts to tune into the webcams! I know they must have appreciated your attention. That's great that Karen got a pic of you with the guests. Must have made you laugh. /auri |

Thanks Steffani for a great update. Great photos and videos!! Love to see Pimu too. She is beautiful and she is totally spoiled with wanting that venison and not fish. But hey...she is your baby. Thanks for all you and the crew do. Stay safe and take care!!
