Hi Everybody,

All of the Catalina eaglets have fledged but none have left their nest areas so it is still relatively easy to get visuals and definitely “live” signals.
K99, the Pinnacle Rock chick has been exploring the coastline west of her nest

Over the weekend, I took someone out to the West End to take the kayaks out and get visuals on the WE eaglets from the water, which is pretty much best way to get close to this nest without disturbing it.
We had left Avalon with clear skies and just a little bit of wind. When we got to the West end things had changed dramatically.

Not looking very promising for kayaking, too windy and definitely too foggy to even see the road much less the nest and the eagles.

Wray took off, probably flew closer to the eaglets and K01 stayed put vocalizing for quite a while

In spite of all the time I spent out there, I was not able to get a visual on neither one of the young birds. K98’s radio is emitting a normal signal while K97’s radio is not giving out a signal at all. For some reason, her radio is not functioning, meaning that we wont have a way to track her other than by getting close enough to read her tags, and we all know how that works… She has been spending a lot of time at the nest though in plain view of the camera so we know she is alright. I will be making regular trips to that part of the island to check on the WE and TH eagles since they will start visiting their nests less and less.

The rest of the island on the drive back from the West End… breathtaking!

The camera magically fixed itself and I was able to process the video that I have been taking for the last two weeks. Enjoy!

Pinnacle Rock – K99 and one of the Twin Rocks eaglets. (I did get to see both of the TR eaglets at the same time but very briefly so just have footage of one of them)

Last week we received news that one of our Catalina eagles, K51, was spotted on San Clemente Island, just south from us. They were lucky enough to get some photos of the eagle fishing… what a treat!

I’d like to end this update with photo of the flower of the prickly pear cactus; it sure makes it hard to hike through it but it gives this island character and it is so pretty to look at.

Until next week,

:}^ STEFFANI Your UPDATE IS:

GORGEOUS!!!

Watching SR K90 soaring on the thermals--and TR K94 doing the same---gives us all a Joyful, Joyful feeling. Look at these "chickies" go! and to think just a few short weeks ago you were holding them in your arms, for their bandings Steffani. Seeing them soaring now, must be extra extra special for you and those with you on those banding trips.

Lovely captures of K01 & Wray and K25 and his mate too. All nesting pairs on Catalina have had a successful season :**:

K51 is a handsome Eagle and the pictures that were taken are really special!

Thank you so much for all the awesome , video of the eagles and beautiful , beautiful Catalina! A magical place indeed. <3

Steffani - Another wonderful update, photos and videos, thank you so much for keeping us up-to-date on the Catalina eagles. Too bad about K97's transmitter, more work for you having to be on eagle lookout now.

Dear Steffani,

Some of those fog pictures look more like something from Middle Earth in "Lord o the Rings," rather than Catalina! Beautiful shots!

What a nice treat to see K-51.

I have to wait until I get to work to see the videos because my connection is too slow here at home but I always enjoy them!

As always and ever, thanks for bringing us along on your appointed eagle rounds. *s*

The flower on the nopal/prickly pear looks yellow-- I've only seen pink flowers. Or are they still developing? In Mexico, they make a wonderful juice from the cactus (I'm not sure if it's the flower or paddles they use, though). I've also used a natural dye made from the nopal fruit that makes a nice magenta color.

Thanks for a great update!

I am so glad to hear that the 2009 ^"^ are all doing so well. I am sorry to hear that K97's transmitter isn't working. I am going to worry about that girl. :o

Loved all the pictures and videos of juveniles, adults, and the scenery of Catalina! I sure would love to be able to see it all in person sometime! :X:

It was great to see pictures of K51 looking so regal and having success at catching something to eat too! >>:

Steffani, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into these updates. I look forward to reading them each week and I appreciate it very much. <3

Thanks for the fabulous update Steffani. Of course the pictures and videos of the birds are delightful and informative, but the one that wins first prize in my opinion is your photo of the cactus blossom. The juxtaposition of the clouds and surrounding vegetation in black and white and the yellows, pinks, and greens of the blossom is breathtaking. The photo is my new screensaver. Bravo! :><: y gracias.

Steffani, thank you so much for your great update. All my years sailing around Catalina, the WE definitely has it's own weather system, so glad the kids are doing great. Thanks again for all you and Peter do.

Steffani, your photography is really great... you get lots of practice with those birds.. the cactus is beautiful.. looks like you used a flash?? very pretty... Thank whomever took those great pictures of 51 fishing on San Clemente... fish in talon...great shot :clk: :)^ Oh, and now that I have been to the WE nest, I know how long it takes and how disappointed to be fogged in when you get there... that tricky, tricky fog....long, bumpy drive home.. but can't beat the view...

Steffani, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the update with the videos of the young ones exploring and working on their flying skills, plus the chance to see the adult pairs. Terrific to see the photos of K-51 catching a fish, and the beautiful pictures of the landscape at the WE! Thank you!

wonderful photos and videos...thanks. the videos give me good perspective of the islands.

the dude singing [or trying to] in the second video needs a lot lot more practice or he needs to go sing far far away.
