My mom really realized today what she has been missing.. Her walker is a pretty red one and it turns on a dime.. has a seat in case she is tired... so, all through JC Penneys and then to the Harbor where we had fish and chips at Andrea's Seafood... where all the Cruzers eat when we hop off the boat from Santa Cruz...  then her food shopping and a stop for her 'Port'... she mixes it with 7-up at night.....cute???  She can't wait to go back now that she has a bag full of new clothes...

My and I got one for my aunt who had a serious fall and became "mobility challanged' from the subdural hematoma on the one side of her brain.

Alas i think its common with many seniors who have had a lifetime of independence not wanting to use them. Call it pride or just plain stubborness they usually eventually relize the need for the support.

when i was using a walker after i messed up my leg for a few weeks i used to joke with my aunt that we need to head out to pasadena for the doo dah day parade and join the "Walker precision drill team" in that parade.

Later a few years ago on the Tony Awards show when Mel Brooks' gem "The producers" cleaned up with the awards. They had a scene where nathan lane , as max byalistock went to "little old lady land" to get the money from the shows finaciers. The shaw wearing little old ladies then started to do flips and other gymnastics with thier walkers and it was a riot! My aunt joked that i should have asked mel to pay me for the idea. rofl

A walker can be a godsend to those who may have problems both with walking around but also for those who are prone to falls for the support they provide. I know when or if i make it to my fathers age i too may be too stubborn to use one when i really need it too. If i were any more pig headed id have a 2 foot snout instead of a nose rofl

Ian - The video of Hero is so cute.  I think he scared the other eaglet.  Wow - it really was an adult call. :<::

I agree. I also think he startled himself!

Hero sounded like there was a lion approaching. Good way for larangytis for eagles. I have never heard them go on and on like that. Wonder what was wrong? Even the parent came flying in to save the day. Is this a case of cry wolfe???

I can fully understand how your mother feels. I really resisted any suggestion that a walker would be good for me. I had more excuses than Carter had liver pills! I certainly did not want to use it IN PUBLIC and never did. Instead of seeing a walker as a tool that I could use to my advantage, I saw it as a constant reminder of my limitations. Today, confined to a wheelchair, I would give anything to have that walker back. It took me a long time to feel comfortable going out in the chair, but I am so grateful for the freedom I now have to go anywhere I want.

Gosh Cat I felt the same way. I was in a wheelchair for 7 months and I felt like a lepper. But then I was so grateful I could still get out. My poor DH had no idea of how to push me even tho he was an MD. We were walking....well I was sitting and he was pushing me down the sidewalk one day and hit a crack in the sidewalk and dumped me out. I laughed but he was mortified. I felt a little like the guy on laugh in .....George the guy that was always falling over....what was his name????

I can find humor in most everything!! Well, as long as it pertains to me.

Did you have an accident too? I got run over by a boat at the lake Feb 20, 1982 at 6:10 pm. Not that I remember exactly :D

I have found that a sense of humor keeps me sane. My DH sounds a lot like yours. He always forgets my rahter large feet are in front of the chair - and I have the bruises to prove it. rofl

The doctors do not know what caused the gradual loss of the use of my legs and right arm. Now I also suffer from ESRD and am on dialysis for four hours three days a week. But I am adjusting. I now have a power chair and DH and I still take mini camping/fishing trips. We can only go for two days at a time, but it is so good to get out and do things like we used to.

Well not sure who the guy was but there is teh imfamous "Mrs Fletcher" of the "IVE fallen and i cant get up ads" a few years ago.

I think soupy sales ,arte johnson and even jerry lewis were experts with the pratfalls as was charlie chaplin

Nice shot of your webber! tack sharp with the leica lens :D Well i am biased in that regards but i love the af lenses too with my nikon F100 film and Nikon D bodies. I was really impressed by the macro capability of the lumix i got as my first step over to the dark side of digital

CAT sorry to hear you have ESRD. That is one of my biggest fears as a diabetic other than losing my eyesight. Wish i could spare a kidney for you but given the diabetes i suspect it would be a crap shot to function long and well after being in me.

My father has some form of nephropathy which has given him some problems with anemia despite the injections of procrit (epotien alpha) for his condition.

I hope you are under the care of a top notch renal specialist since theyre up on all the latest innovations to keep you fiesty and active for a long long time :)^

I agree with teh humor for health. WHen they wheeled me into the or for the removal of my brain tumor in 93 i asked my brain surgeon for the 2 for 1 speical on a lobotomy and he said, "i am sorry but that offer expired yesterday with the last patient" rofl

Since i was planning ,pardon the pun, a head, i handed him a small bag of marbles and told him to replace the ones i had lost and told him to tighten up the few screws loose i had too while he was in there. rofl

::in a henny youngman voice:: seriousy folks now take my photo...PUH-LEEZE!

(as the hook comes from the stage wings to drag me off stage) :P

Thanks, George. I think my nephrologists are up to date, unfortunately, because of my other health problems and age, I am not a candidate for transplant. Since both kidneys failed at the same time and without any warning, it is felt a transplant would also fail. But as I said, with my power chair I get around better than ever (well, almost) and with the "handicap van" the city runs, I can go almost anywhere I want all by myself.

Ah since you are in NM where bugs should have taken the left turn for the pismo beach clam festival , i had a cousin who attended U NM as a communications major. What we east coasters joke about is that she was a dj on thier college station who spun country western tunes. The family had laughs over this because of her distinctive massachusetts accent.

One of my colleagues was a transfer from the Carlsbad Caverns National Park which is one i really do want to see in my lifetime too
