Sounds to me like you drank some pop or ate something with a lot of sugar or chocolate because the caffeine would definitely keep you awake. Maybe have a nap this afternoon to feel more energetic

Penny - I think your little squirrel has some birdie genes in him. We had to take down our birdfeeder a few years ago as the squirrels destroyed the balcony over the feeder trying to get into it. The cost was $1200.00 for repairs but thank goodness the condominium paid for it. |

An abridged version of David Hancock's Notes from FledgeFest July 8,2009 ......Karen and I decided to take an earlier ferry to the Island so we could have an extra hour to track down the eaglets -- particularly since the reports of Tiny Tink were not all that encouraging. However, it was Tiny Tink that we found first and he was 420 - 450 feet from where he had been seen the two days before. ![]() Image by karenb (lightened by me) No wonder he is so hard to spot !!! We had a great chance to view him from about 14 - 20 feet and he seemed normal in all regards. Both wings were raised well and normally flopping. Someone suggested one foot was dragging. On close inspection all seems fine and he had simply been hooked onto a branch in such a way that there was no place to put the other foot so it hung until he repositioned himself and then readily grabbed on properly with both feet. He did not fly in our presence but certainly moved about the branches with agility. Does he have an injured wing? It does not appear so but until one sees him flying this is almost impossible to tell. Of course big injuries are easy to assess. Little, but potentially debilitating ones, can be difficult to assess even when the bird is in hand. My conclusion is that he was fine and would be best left alone. I have made arrangements for someone to go in to double-check that tree and surrounding area on Monday and they will get back to me. That is how it is left and by Monday PM I should have some news. BUT then, another 200 yards around the corner and I spied one of the other two chicks. It was on the apex of a tree 400 yards to the east of the nest. During our time I had twice seen the adult male fly over on an eastward course and I suspected the chicks were in that direction and he was checking up on them. With the finding of this second chick and again seeing the adult go on further east and south I worked myself more in that direction and sure enough -- there on a tree top well on the horizon about 800 - 1000 yards away was the third chick. All accounted for and seen within a five minute period. It looks like we have another nest with 3 fledged young but I will be happier -- hopefully -- with the Monday report. By the time we got out of the compound and joined the accumulating throngs the third chick had flown all the way back and into the nest.... One interesting item, since I got a call from Bob Chappell that he had the two new cams ready -- both color with infra-red night options, was the vote of which of the Sidney nests do I put it on? The locals who have been doing intensive cam viewing came out 24 for putting it on the old nest and only 3 people voted to have it put on this year's nest. Apparently with the adults attending the old nest and rebuilding it up this summer the majority feel our options are better going with the old nest. We still have another two -- four weeks and then it will be clean lens etc. time. Today -- Saturday: Karen and I went to the Delta 1 nest and removed the encircling net we had placed there just before I left for Alaska. Of course as you all know this effort was not needed but left us all feeling better that it was done. Should the chick now fall out it simply could not come straight down with the size of its present wings so the net has become unnecessary. Also it was becoming unsightly. Many duck frames and wing parts had been "caught" and so had a fully uneaten 2/3 grown duckling carcass. I took it to the nearby fields and threw it well out from the road. Cheers to all David |

Yikers Carole ![]() I have no intention of using a squirrel baffle on any of my feeders. They are all easily accessible from trees or the garage roof anyway so there is no reason for them to get destructive trying to get the seed. Thanks for the 'heads up' though
