Marti love the saying about the Dentist. Read it to Ken and he got a chuckle out of it. Marti & Lala good luck at the Dentist. As long as you brush & floss daily you should be ok. George they only do the Oldies sorry. Deb after this month, I probably won't be getting the Courier Times any time soon again, so you will have to do the daily sayings Ex: Pecan Pie Day ( I just love that one ) again. Christopher glad you are well rested. It's no fun the following day after a louzy nights sleep, I know going through that myself again today! Lala love the Waffle Iron. |

Hi Linda. If you go every six months, there will be no surprises at the dentist. I like it that way! I got my first braces at 30. Did the frequent checks for a long time. Then lots of travel both business and pleasure. The dentist got left behind for at least seven years. When we started with this local dentist early in 07, I was really afraid of what he would find. (Just one tiny cavity) Since then, I did have one molar go bad (the CA dentist did a "pulpectomy" (sp?) which in plain English is a very deep cavity which is drilled out and stuff put in to prevent infection and filled. (It lasted me about 15 years! Good dentist!!) So I had a root canal from a specialist and no pain. My local dentist did the crown. I have one other molar which eventually will have to go down the same path, but for now, all's good. Take care of your teeth - save them if you can - schedule 6 month checkups |

Jill, so sorry to hear about your step-daughter in law's little dog. What a horrible thing to have happen....much less see and not be able to do anything about it. Also sorry to hear about Michael's accident. Glad he wasn't hurt any worse than he was! It's getting more and more dangerous on the highways. I had a close call on the freeway last week returning from visiting my dad in the hospital. Even a close call shakes one up! My surragate daughter & her DH had a very close call a couple nights ago. They were on their way home when someone tried to kill her & her DH by making a U-turn on freeway and gunning it toward them headon!!! They weren't physically hurt, but, needless to say, it sure did shake them both up! |

Thanks Penny. I'm just glad the girls weren't there to see it happen. It would have been horrifying to not be able to do anything & hear the dog all the way down the canyon. As of Sat., Michael had not heard any news on the woman's condition. They didn't think she was on alcohol. Perhaps she was in a diabetic coma. I assume Michael will find out at some point. I too thing it was a good thing he was in his truck (verses their van or little car). |

Jann What did they do to get out of the way of that absolute maniac????We were talking at dinner last night with elderly neighbors who spend their winters in Palm Springs and they told us a hair raising story of driving on the freeway and somebody in the lane on one side of them started shooting at another car in a lane on the other side of them. They could actually smell the gun powder when it happened ![]() They try to stay off the freeways as much as possible now

Thanks Jann. I know if it was me & it was my little Teddy from growing up days I'd have been an emotional wreck. Don't know how S-DIL's hubby felt about the dog, but I know he felt bad for the girls. And I guess it must have been dark or he'd been able to get his gun & take a shot at the coyote to try & save the dog. It's very steep down into the canyon from their backyard, so he could have never run after it. WOW, that is a very scary incident your surrogate daughter & her DH went through. I hope that person didn't end up hurting anyone. Anyone would have been shaken up by something like that. I hope someone on that freeway called 9-1-1. |

Here's a very humorous story about the transportation of a bear cub to WCV on July 6th.... ![]() I picked up this little guy on Monday morning and drove him to the Wildlife Center. WORST transport of my time at the Wildlife Center. At first the cub was nice and quiet. He was resting very comfortably in his cat carrier. Then he decided to try to break out. Scratch scratch scratch scratch … I’m thinking this cat carrier can contain a cat but … a bear cub??? Scratch scratch scratch scratch gnaw gnaw gnaw gnaw. I’m plotting possible rescue stops along the way. There’s a pet store over THERE … just up the road is a vet’s office … a LOWE’s there (I bet they have pet carriers and they’re open; maybe I can get a bigger one to put the smaller one in; that will slow him down; like one of those Russian nesting dolls). I can call ahead and ask them to bring one out to the curb for me. Then we move to ROCKING. Left. Right. Left left LEFT. If the cub throws its weight against the side of a cat carrier, it can ALMOST tip it over. Then crying. Wailing. Whimpering. Then crying again … And then …. Silence … Oh my god the thing has died. Gone into cardiac arrest. Got his head stuck in the carrier opening and strangled. And then … Repeat. I was exhausted. But both of us are alive. My best, Randy Wildlife Center Admits Second Bear Cub of Summer 2009 On Monday, July 6, 2009, the Wildlife Center of Virginia admitted a small Black Bear cub from Rappahannock County. This bear had spent (more or less) three days up in a mulberry tree at Eldon Farms and had eluded rescuers. He was ultimately captured on the afternoon of Sunday, July 5 with the assistance of a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conservation Police Officer and an animal control officer from Rappahannock County. Licensed wildlife rehabiliator Amo Merritt took the cub overnight, and the bear was transported to the Wildlife Center of Virginia on Monday morning. Upon admission, the bear received a complete physical exam. The bear — a male — was slightly emaciated, dehydrated, and full of ticks but had no other apparent major health issues. The cub weighed in at 2.3 kgs — about 4.9 pounds. According to Dr. Dave McRuer, the Center’s Director of Veterinary Medicine, “The cub was VERY active during his physical exam and certainly did not appreciate being handled.” The Center veterinary staff removed the ticks, administered fluids, and fed the cub a mixture of soft fruits and vegetables, moistened dog chow, and baby food. The bear was assigned patient number #09-1503, indicating that this cub is the 1,503rd patient admitted to the Wildlife Center during 2009. ![]() The bear cub was taken up to the Center’s special bear pen — an isolated cinderblock building designed for the care and feeding of Black Bears. For the time being, #09-1503 is in his own enclosure. His pen adjoins the pen currently occupied by Bear Cub #09-1227, another male, admitted to the Center on June 17 from Highland County. This cub’s mother and a sibling were struck and killed by a car. At this point, #09-1227 is larger than the Rappahannock cub; at admission, the cub weighted 3.47 kgs [7.6 lbs] and now weighs 5.4 kgs [11.9 pounds]. Once Center vets determine that both cubs are disease- and parasite-free, and after a period of adjustment, it’s likely that the two cubs will be housed together. UPDATE July 13 Over the weekend, the two bear cubs were examined and weighed. Bear cub #09-1227 now weighs 8.2 kgs — about 18 pounds . Bear cub #09-1503 weighed in at 3.2 kgs — about 7 pounds. According to the Center rehabilitation staff, both bears are eating well; both bears are now on a “hard food” diet — including vegetables, fruits, a few nuts, and dog chow. At this point, it appears that the two cubs are still largely sticking to their own pens. Center rehabbers watched as 09-1227 started to cross the threshold into 09-1503’s pen. However, the larger cub did an about-face in response to a warning growl from his much smaller pen-mate. |
