Hello Eagle Fans, I am glad to report that all eight Catalina eaglets have been soaring the skies of their territories and the older ones are already starting to wander out a bit farther each day. I have been checking each nest every couple of days and trying to get al least one visual per week. It is still relatively easy to do so since they continue to come back to the actual nest for feedings but pretty soon, they will all leave the coasts of their nest area and will move into the interior of the island looking for something to scavenge on. The Seal Rocks eaglet, K90, is the oldest eaglet on the island and this week he ventured almost all the way to town. I started my East End survey and right at the first gate I got a very strong signal coming from the city garbage dump, which is located on the industrial side of Avalon. I got my radio and antenna out and pretty soon I spotted him being harassed away by many ravens and gulls and before I could get my camera out, he had already flown back to his territory. A couple of days later, I checked on him again and I spotted him flying from the nest canyon towards the quarry. It was very brief but I managed to snap some pictures. ![]() You can hardly tell but you have to believe me, there is an eagle inside that circle. ![]() Last Thursday I went out with one of the coastal rangers, Randy Lewis, on a boat survey of the channel side of the island. He took off from Avalon and went all the way to Rippers cove, which is pretty close to Isthmus Harbor. On our way out I looked for the Rattlesnake pair but I didn’t find them. K47 and K80 are seen regularly buy kayakers so I know they are still around and together. Once we arrive to the Twin Rocks (TR) area we quickly spotted one of the juveniles who turned out to be K96. Here’s a video of K96 flying right over us. ![]() I was hoping to see both of them but it is really hard to look for a perched juvenile from a moving boat. His signal was good so we decided to keep going. ![]() On the way back we stopped at TR again but no luck finding K94. I’m heading out there today and hopefully get some visuals again. This is Goat Harbor, which is the cove west from TR nest. ![]() Can you find the TR nest on this picture? ![]() I made a trip to Two Harbors and the West End this week and here’s a great video of the TH eaglets flying over the area and one of the adults perched on their favorite roost. ![]() After that, I headed out to the West End hoping to get some pictures of the nest area but unfortunately, the fog made it impossible for me to see anything farther than 50ft. I took a video so you have an idea of how thick the fog gets out here. On one side it is nice, sunny and clear, but if you turn around it all is completely white. K98’s signal is normal and K97’s radio is still not working. Luckily, both eaglets have been returning to the nest and they can be seen on the cam. Once they stop doing that I’ll be taking trips to the WE more often to make sure they are doing ok. ![]() Pete has been off the island this past week taking some time off, but among other things, he has been notifying the winners of our many prizes, so, if you participated on our 2009 Nest Adoption Challenge and you haven’t gotten an e-mail from us, keep checking because I just drew 20 more numbers this morning and Pete will be contacting them in the nest couple of days. I look forward to having people come and visit during their tours and get a bit more familiar with the work that we do, the terrain we work on and, of course, enjoy the magnificent views of this beautiful island and its wildlife. I’ll leave you with a gorgeous shot of the sun setting on the southern coast of Catalina. Because of the heat, sometimes it is better if I go look for the young eagles in the evening. I guess really early in the morning would work out too but I’m not really a morning person, and also, I wouldn’t be able to get this views. ![]() Until next week, Steffani |

Steffanie what another wonderful update! Once again I enjoyed all the pictures and videos. You must have super eyesight to spot an eagle sitting out on a rock on the side of a mountain covered in brush like you do. Amazing! I really liked seeing and hearing how the eagles are tracked on the WE video and especially enjoyed watching Thunder and Lightning soaring at TH. Thanks again! Hope my name is one of the new 20 drawn!!
