This day in History

Apollo 11 Lands on the Moon

Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

The lunar module was named Eagle after the bald eagle, which is depicted on the insignia of the mission.

eaglepedia revisited

July 9, 2007

With the necessity of defending territories not needed in the winter, eagles of all ages will congregate along open bodies of water (below dams, running rivers, discharges from power plants) to feed on fish and waterfowl they can catch. For the young eagles, this can be a difficult time, scavenging for leftovers from the more experienced eagles and learning how to steal. Injuries are rare from fights that do break out.

I'm busy getting ready to head to camp this weekend with my scouts so I will be MIA next week! ES and I return home on the same day and this year I'll be there to greet him (last time I was still at camp and someone else greeted him at the homecoming rofl )

interesting discussion yesterday - the wife of one of the guys hiking with ES - was recently driving upsate on a highway heading to camp when something caught her eye - yes she saw a bald eagle in flight in an area where they are beginning to return to ......... so let me tell ya, my friend is driving us to camp next weekend thank goodness cause I intend to be watching the skies ..... come on eagles :soar:

she said she nearly wrecked her car - she was so thrilled to see her first bald eagle in flight .... :**: me too and I wasn't even there ...... so I told her all about IWS :<::

Neil Armstrong grew up in a little town in Ohio just 10 minutes from where I grew up and I had the honor of being able to march with my high school band at his homecoming parade in August of that year!

on a sad note - my mom advised recently that they have closed the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta (Wapak to the locals) due to budget/economy. It is planned to reopen but not any time soon :(

Neil's parents lived behind my best friend's grandparents' home - I met them a couple times but of course never him - he was long gone by then - being an astronaut!

Deb - What sad news about the Neil Armstrong Museum, hope they get the necessary funding to re-open it. You know we always stop in Wapak on our way down to Florida and always walked our dogs on the beautiful grounds at the museum.
