Hello Everybody, We have had another great week here on Catalina. I have been busy chasing around the intrepid young eagles at their territories; happy that no one has moved too far away from their area yet, but I know they will. And then, theirs and my adventure begins. I have seen K99, the Pinnacle Rock eagles, twice this week and was able to get a really short video. ![]() Despite of how hot it has been this week, the fog always settles in the lower elevations and canyons, making it really difficult to get visuals on our birds. ![]() It started clearing out a little but still covered most of the area I need to survey. ![]() Finally a visual ![]() Closer ![]() Do you see it yet? ![]() Not able to read the tag but I know it’s K94. ![]() A little closer. ![]() The closest I could get ![]() I went fishing over the weekend and managed to get 18 fish all together. Most of them were bluegill. I know she prefers bass but they are harder to catch and Pete is better at catching large bass. Two weeks worth of food for our lovely Pimu. ![]() Cont... |

I did notice the live fish I had left in the pond is gone so I assume Pimu at some point went down and caught herself a little snack. I’ll remember next time I go fishing to keep one alive and put it in the pond again, it’ll give her something to do. Speaking of her, I took a few pictures of Pimu drying out in the sun after I had sprayed them with water because it has been really hot lately. She enjoys it so much, she flaps, and she turns around, it’s quite adorable. ![]() ![]() Not wanting me to get any closer ![]() Getting ready for a big poop-shot! ![]() Last week I had an eagle presentation at the Avalon Public Library. The library had requested an hour-long program for kids K-6th and their parents, since Pete was away I did the talk and decided to get Pii’ ich ready for it too. I brought Pii’ ich to town for her very first time and she did so wonderfully. We had “practice” getting in and out of the carrier the week before, and with the help of a friend, I drove her out to a field to see how see did with the transportation aspect of it all. Since everything was new she stressed out a little but the second time went much better. The actual day of the program was really hot so I covered her cage just a little during the ride but I also wanted to see how she was doing inside. She kept looking around and out the barred windows of her cage, not moving much at all. Someone else helped me move the carrier out of the truck and we were good to go. I talked about the project and the recent success on the islands for about a half hour. I brought all kinds of visual aids to kelp me keep the kids focused: wing markers, radio-telemetry stuff, pellets, feathers, leg bands, egg carrier, fake eggs, etc. ![]() Before I took her out the kids asked me if they were going to get to hold her but once I got her out they realized why I had said they wouldn’t! She was bigger than everybody there (including me if she expands her wings all the way). At first she was a bit nervous but once she calmed down she gave us a great poop-shot and then I started feeding her and everybody was in awe watching her go from a gentle, “soft-spoken” eagle into a fierce carnivore. ![]() She gave us such a great show, I have no doubt she will do great in future programs, especially if we have them regularly so she can get used to the idea of going out in public. ![]() I’ll say goodbye with another breathtaking Catalina sunset at one of my favorite beaches on the island. ![]() Until next week, Steffani |

Oh, Steffani, how exciting and wonderful for you to be able to take Pii'ich for her first 'outing'. Those kids (and their parents) must have been mesmerized!!! I can just hear her purring and chittering while she was eating. I think that was my favourite part of my tour with you. That, and Pimu allowing me right in her enclosure! What a happy, happy update!! Pat MacDonald |

Thanks for the update. I don't know how you can spot eagles. I can't see them in your distant photos - even with the circles! Pii'ich looks so wonderful. Glad she behaved for your presentation.

It's always so much fun to read about what you and the eagles do every day. The students and teachers must have been in awe to actually meet you and Heidi while you educate them on the work IWS does daily. Sounds like a great way to start off the new school year. Good fishing

Steffani, well done on giving such a memorable presentation to all the children at the library program. They are so fortunate to have had such a learning experience. Pii'ich did wonderfully well on representing her species up close and personal. The visual aids that you brought along must have been fascinating for the children in attendance. Nice catch of fish there, happy that Pimu enjoyed her shower, funny to hear Darwin puffing away in the K99 video ...... thanks for such a fun update. |

Steffani You are a great fisherwoman from the looks of your catch. What a wonderful update. Pii'ich looks so trusting with you, comfortable and alert in those pictures. I'm sure you were very proud of her on her first public educational outing. Great shots of K-94. Thank you for all you do.

Great update Steffani - I am in awe of the location of the eagles nests and that so many of you hike to those nests on Banding Day - incredible - much easier viewing them from the scope if you can find them and you always do. So happy it all turned out well with taking Pii'ich to the school - will there be other opportunities at the schools on Catalina - I imagine they have elementary and high school there - are there more than one? Would you ever be taking Pii'ich by plane or boat to the mainland to visit schools? What other opportunities are there for presentations on Catalina to keep Pii'ich in practice? So great to see how much Pimu enjoyed being sprayed with water and showing you her enjoyment of it. |

Congratulations Steffani ... on your first public presentation with Pii’ ich. You were very well prepared ... to keep everyone focused ... and I am sure all who were present had a wonderful time. Hope this is just the start ... and that there will be many more presentations to help educate and spread the word about the restoration project. Pimu certainly enjoyed her shower ... hope that she also enjoys all the fish you caught for her. Thanks for a great update. |

Oh Steffani! What a great update! I sooooo wish my school was closer so you could bring Pii' ich to see my kids! They would just love her! I would have loved to be there at your presentation, also! Of course, Jim and I had our own private presentation a few mos. ago but I would go to one over and over! I do so love both Pii' ich and beautiful Pimu! |
