update I have no phone contact with ES now - they are on the trail - no communication until late on 7/31 when they come back in from the mountains!

today is still training day - learning/practicing site set up/bear bags/cooking/ treating water/reading a map/etc. their ranger will probably stay with them yet tonight and then tomorrow AM they'll be on their own......

a couple photos just for reference (won't have anymore of theirs until they are home)

a view looking back at base camp area - gary's crew did a little climbing in altitude yesterday - in a couple days they have a huge upward trek - hitting nearly 12,000 feet by the end of that day ... it will be their hardes and longest day! after that - it's a ton of downhill! whew

a sample camp set up - tents are put up randomly - not in a straight line - there are a lot of deer and if one gets into your camp (and they do) - if the first tent scares him and if the tents were in a straight line - he'd be likely to jump into the next tent and the next and the next

so if the set up is random and he jumps, there won't be anything in front of him except open space!

eaglepedia revisited

August 17, 2007

"Instinct drives these migrations," reports researcher Grainger Hunt. "These young birds have never hunted before and have never caught anything. Yet they leave their parents behind and suddenly, they fly a thousand miles north at the end of the summer. It's very surprising." The juveniles begin by eating carrion found at the mouths and inland stretches of large rivers - huge salmon die offs. They next lern how to catch live fish, a necessity before they reach breeding age.

<a href='http://www.ucsc.edu/oncampus/currents/97-10-06/eagle.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.ucsc.edu/oncampus/currents/97-10-06/eagle.htm</a>

To understand the migratory timing of the juvenile bald eagles, we must first realize that their strategy evolved during pristine times when food distribution and abundance may have differed from today. Food supplies that may have been available to inexperienced juveniles include (1) winter-killed carcasses emerging during snowmelt (elk, bison, etc); (2) fish kills at thawing high-altitude lakes; (3) nesting and molting waterfowl; (4) the spawning salmon and other fishes; and (5) the calving seasons of elk, bison, pronghorn antelope, etc. Together, these might have acted as a selective force to maintain the adaptation among southern eagles to migrate northward.

Gary and crew should have a great trek. I envy them!

Had a big rain last evening. At our house we had over 2 inches - more than the city normally gets all summer! We didn't have any problems with flooding, but we live higher on the mountain. Areas lower than us did have flooding.

Solar eclipse shrouds Asia in daytime darkness.....

TOKYO, Japan - Millions of Asians turned their eyes skyward Wednesday as dawn suddenly turned to darkness across the continent in the longest total solar eclipse this century will see. Millions of others, seeing the rare event as a bad omen, shuttered themselves indoors.

Chinese launched fireworks and danced in Shanghai. On a remote Japanese island, bewildered cattle went to their feeding troughs thinking night had fallen.

Photo of eclipse from Pakistan: (Looks like a Oooo Lala photo to me) :D

:bday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY Julie May all your wishes come true as you blow out your candles :bday:

Today is Hammock Day. Oh how I wish I could take the time, on my day off today, to chill out in a hammock, but can't because I don't have one anymore! :'(
The weather here is perfect for doing just that.

Sure wish we could see the Solar Eclipse here, but no such luck. They said with the last one that those of us in America will never see another Solar Eclipse!

Next month the Moon and Mars? will both be the exact same size as we see them! This should be a lot of fun for our Photographers here in Chat to have some fun with!

CatM - I was out in the rain right in the middle of the storm! I was northbound on Eubank near Indian School, and it took me about 35 minutes to get home just east of Academy. Oddly enough, most all of the rain had stopped by the time I reached Spain and when I got home, it was completely dry! But at Eubank and Comanche, the water was flowing hard over the curbs. It has been a while since we have had a rain like that. I'm glad you didn't have problems at your house.

I was thinking of ES and the scouts as the rain was pretty scattered throughout the state. The weather map showed rain around Taos and Angel Fire, so I bet the guys got something. Just hope it wasn't a downpour! The good news is, though, that the temperatures are going to drop a bit for a few days.
