I received an email this morning about the continuing traffic in poached elephant ivory....![]() The growing demand for ivory has lead to skyrocketing rates of illegal poaching, and unless ivory sales are permanently banned, elephants and rhinos are likely to go extinct. In fact, Kenyan Wildlife Authorities recently seized $1 million worth of elephant tusks and rhino horns bound for ivory markets in Asia. Please go here for more information on how you can help ![]() http://s11.zetaboards.com/IWS_Eagle_Forum/ This post has been modified to stay in accordance with the rules

Thank you Penny. Ozzie went to see the newest baby elephant yesterday, as you've all seen on the IWS Chat. Just precious with it's mom. It sickens me that these intelligent gorgeous animals are slaughtered for their tusks/ivory. My parents always instilled in me ivory is bad, elephants die for it, same thing with fur. I can't access the petition from work, but it's #1 on my list when I get home tonight. |

Great Vickie The baby elephant that Ozzie has been posting about is actually an Asian elephant and those do not have the ivory tusks. It is the African elephants that grow those enormous ivory tusks, if they ever get to an older age
Not everyone who lives where these elephants roam are sympathetic to their plight because they do create a lot of damage to crops grown by subsistence farmers who need their corn and other crops to feed themselves and their families.

Rhino horns are made of keratin, not ivory, but they use rhino horn in a lot of different things. The Chinese use it in a lot of medicines. Very sad!
Such magnificent animals!

Linda those of the flycatcher are really awesome. Did you set up a blind to take those??? Love the fanned out tail as the groceries are delivered. They certainly know the advantage of a varied diet for their growing chicks and no 'junk' food like poor Phil Jr has been eating

I have watched the elephants many times on the Africam and they are just so amazing! The babies are always so cute and playful and it is a wonder they don't get stepped on by the big mamas! I watched once when a baby got stuck in the water and couldn't get up the bank. All the other elephants came over to help it and after struggling to get it up the bank for several minutes, it was finally led up to another area of the bank where it was easier to climb out. How cool was that??!! |

After looking at the flycatcher 's again I'm wondering if the yellow jacket would 'sting' on the way down and whether the stick insect would tickle and even if the lizard would try to run back out  None if them look 'dead' to me ![]() I've seen those videos of the baby elephant struggling to get out of the mud too Karen and one time it was an older sibling who guided the baby over to Mom who lifted it up with her trunk

Penny - because we are sea level, the guys increased the water intake at least a month before flying to NM. That's also why they spent a couple days in Albuquerque - besides having some fun and site seeing, it was also to allow them time to get used to the altitude. Their first couple hikes at the Ranch are also not too difficult to give them even more time to settle in - especially because at that time, they are carrying 45-50 lb. packs! If they did all that they were supposed to do at home, they should be fine! They've been doing lots of practice and preparation since March here at home. |

yes - they have to bring a change of clothes - rain gear - jacket - sleeping bag - 4 days of food - water for drinking and cooking - tent - and a few other things - doesn't take long for that toothbrush and t-shirt to add up! they go over and over the gear and even when they got there - they did another check of gear to get it down to the minimum and yet be safe! they carry on a pro-rated basis to their body weight - OH yeah and the backpack weighs something LOL |

reading thru the paper and guess what's in there - pigeons and doves are "the same birds that belong to the order called Columbidae. The term pigeon is usually used to indicate larger birds in the order and dover for the smaller ones, but there is no biological distinction." hmmmmm |

Just got back. Trying to catch up. Topa, Zoey looks like she is having a ball. Lala, that flycatcher really provides a great variety for the young. Penny, I really appreciate the info on the eagles to be released. |

Penny...Kris hasn't designed anything lately. But he has an app't. in La Jolla later today for a shop that may want to carry his jewelry. Patio cover and deck are not done yet. Been too hot (in the 90s) to do much on it and Jim and I are on vacation this week. Jim just started vacation yesterday. More of a staycation really since not going away. Not sure what we are going to do today but maybe drive up the coast aways. Nice just not going to work. Don't want to go south as the races at Del Mar started yesterday so traffic will be bad. Oh and Kris is having a really hard time with the heat. Not used to it anymore since living in San Francisco  |
