eaglepedia revisited June 2, 2008 (Part I) In the beginning days of "tagging" eaglets, one of the first things that was learned concerned the movements of the young eales immediately after they left the nest. Most fledglings stayed within a mile of the nest for 6 to 8 weeks. It was interesting that a number of the eaglets were found on the ground during the initial weeks after fledging. The young birds appear to find it easier to perch on the ground until they are more skilled at flying and landing. "The Bald Eagle" ![]() Fledged Eaglets IWS Wing Bling Replica (from my collection) - fit in palm of your hand (bling photos are clickable for larger image) and June 4, 2008 Part II - Young from the nest that was monitored using time-lapse photography returned periodically to the nest either to visit or to feed on food left by the adults. Throughout this period, the adults continue to bring food to the young; the eaglets have a plaintive food-begging call to enable the adults to find them even if they are perched low and camouflaged well. The movement of the young away from the nest revealed a tendency to drif downwind. The direction taken was also influenced by the shoreline since birds tended to follow the forest edge rather than move overland. Eagles 21 weeks old (7 to 9 weeks after fledging) were no longer found on the lake as frequently and one was seen 350 miles to the southeast! Good news! The Conure that eggscaped from the Philadelphia Zoo has been recaptured in Fairmont Park in Philly which isnt too far from the zoo itself. From the KYW1060 AM news radio site Zoo's Bye Bye Birdie Safely Found in Fairmount Park by KYW's Michelle Durham A missing bird that flew away from the Philadelphia Zoo has been located. (see related story) Philadelphia Zoo spokesperson Bill Larsen is thrilled the sun conure, a tropical parrot, was located in and around Fairmount Park: "The bird was located after following up on the over 100 leads we received after getting the word out about our bird. Our animal department has confirmed that it is the bird. It's safe, healthy, and we are just thrilled to have it back with our zoo family." Larsen says because the bird had some training, it's handlers were able to coax it from it's perch. What did the bird dine on while he was on the loose? Larsen has some theories: "it summer, so there's a lot of small insects around seeds, and that is what the bird would eat naturally." The sun conure is now safely back at the Philadelphia Zoo |

Hello Cruzers. I'm back from my vacation. Worst vacation I've ever had and I'm very glad to be home. I'm on my fourth load of laundry already. Yikes. What's happening with Hulabird????? I managed to get a distant picture of an eagle last week. It's not very clear. I haven't had a chance to down load them yet. Yesterday DH and I were sitting on the dock when two eagles flew over the lake. I grabbed my camera as one dove in and grabbed a fish but by the time I got the camer up to my eyes both eagles took off around the island. It would have been an awesome picture. So what's everyone been up to the last few weeks??? I've missed you all. I also wanted to thank everyone who has kept an eye out on my Farm.

Hi All---We have been loading WindCatcher all day --getting ready to sail away tomorrow morning to spend a week at our favorite coves. Menus planned for 15 - 18 meals and STUFF! I sure hope K87 & K91 stay in their nest neighborhood thru next week. We are hoping to go around to Cat Harbor and moor for 2 days---all depends on the Big Swell we are experiencing, hoping by Tuesday, things will be back to our sea conditions so we can accomplish "going around West End" and of we will be looking to see K97 & K98. TR 94 & 96 hopefully will show themselves too if they are still around their neighborhood. I am especially excited also, because when we sail away tomorrow I will still be 64 years old and when we wake up Monday morning, bobbing on a mooring, I will be 65!!! WooooHooooo!!!!! It is going to a fun birthday week with my guy and eagles and kayaking. Since the waters are warmer, we are going to break out the fins and snorkels. Back to the kitchen, now dinner to prepare. |
