Eaglepedia Revisited

June 5, 2008

Part III - Tagging/Fledging cont'd. The movement of the young away from the nest revealed a tendency to drift downwind. The direction taken was also influenced by the shoreline since birds tended to follow the forest edge rather than move overland. Eagles 21 weeks old (7 to 9 weeks after fledging) were no longer found on the lake as frequently and one was seen 350 miles to the southeast!

Part IV The colored wing tags produced in a short time, much more information on eagle movements than had been possible with banding. Additional valuable information was obtained. An eagle from the lake was sighted several winters in a row in the same location, establishing that a bird will return to the same wintering area year after year. Resightings of eagles on the breeding grounds showed that many returned to the lake where they had been raised, first to spend the summer and later to breed.

Part V - Color-marking has been successful but since there is a limited number of colors and a good continent-wide color-marking scheme was not put in place, overlapping use of colors by different researchers soon made it a less useful technique. Radiotelemetry came into use for investigating movements. One young eagle in Minnesota was tracked a distance of 410 miles from the nest, covering an average of 95 miles per day. However another young eagle was tracked randomly wandering for about a month before returning to the nest and then beginning it's "migration". The eagle began a southward journey but instead of continuing straight, flew in a very large circle covering 560 miles, arriving back where it had began. Those results suggested that the young-of-the-year usually migrate independently of their parents.

eaglepedia revisited (since I'll be away a bit)

Part VI - Tagging/Fledging cont'd. In the subsequent studies, it was found that bald eagles are consistent in starting their daily flight when "migrating" if the weather is reasonable, flying when the good thermals become available. Thermals are better in spring than in fall and turbulence in the atmosphere is greater. As a result thermals are important to spring migration. A following wind and a row of thermals will allow an eagle to soar continually downwind in big circles without using any significant amount of gliding. Flapping flight, because of its high metabolic cost, is avoided whenever possible. Often, eagles must use a combination of the available thermals, slope lift along a river or line of hills, and long glides, sometimes flapping between each lift.

Part VII - Tagging/Fledging cont'd. Eagles choose their migratory routes to take advantage of thermals, updrafts and food sources. In the fall, the birds frequent stopover points near lakes and rivers. In the spring, the migration is cross-country without any obvious orientation to natural landmarks though sections of a migratory route may follow rivers or mountain ranges. Radio tracking of the eagles suggests that movements occur during the day between 8AM and about 6PM with most eagles not starting until 10AM.

Saw the "intruders" on yesterday's NO and comments here. I just have a question as to the actual enforcement of the area that the WE nest is located.

1. is this location part of the Channel Islands National Park? If so there should be some Ranger-Protection personnel who have the ability to actually cite and or arrest those intruders IF it is within the NP. A few stills sent to the proper law enforcemnt officials could keep the heat on the intruders and perhaps teach them a lesson that will cost them a pretty penny :BX:

2 If not, who has the actual authority? The US Fish and Wildlife Service? The local law enforcement of California including its wildlife enforcement officers or somebody else?

(from personal occupational experience, I only had the authority within park boundries as a matter of policy but often when we made an arrest we would turn them over ot the local police unless it was a more serious federal offence as often the state had stronger penalties for certain infractions)

Good Morning---We are heded off to leave for Catalina but I must say my Mia Culpa I wrote last eveninga. My first reaction to those numbsculls on WE so infuriated me and I wished bad things on them--(Taloning by Wray or K01). That was very bad of me.

If I offended anyone here, I am very sorry. Happily, the arrival of those two guys on WE nest did not deter the sisters from returning "home'.

Have a great week everyone, watching the fledgelings.

Karen you didn't say anything that the rest of us weren't thinking. Didn't upset me at all.

I wish you all could have been here the last twenty minutes or so. A flurry of activity outside my house. Must me some trees have some ripe berries or seeds. I had a yard full of Blue Jays, Northern Flickers, robins, Downy and Harry woodpeckers and chipmunks all screaming over the seeds and berries. What a riot. I couldn't get a picture without scaring them all away. It was really amazing.

there must be some way to make the 'idiots' pay who climbed to WE nest and walked over it....isn't it a Federal law against that kind of thing? if you have any kind of pictures...you can send them to Feds...they'll be able to figure them out....or Wildlife/Game people...their computers are much more refined than any of ours....

and IF there isn't a law , there well should be..........! just my humble opinions

Karen - Have a wonderful sailing voyage around the islands, and take lots of pictures. May the winds cooperate and the weather be perfect.

As far as your coments about the intruders at WE yesterday, have no fear, we all agree with you. I just hope that they are caught and dealt with in a severe way.
