I missed the video but I hope so too. Let's set their pants on fire and see how they feel about trampling thru? Something just "flew" thru my yard. It went so fast I couldn't tell but I suspect a cat.....probably how fast Coleman ran when he was facing down that deer!!! |

This is a red rumped catbird shot this afternoon. Sorta ironic that he/she is hanging out in a dogwood world however ![]()

Sandie...think you may be a little confused as to the birthdays. Yesterday it was my (KareninSoCali) birthday and today is the other Karen's (SoCal Lady) birthday. Hence people saying "happy birthday, Karen" for 2 days. It is a bit confusing  But we both only had 1 birthday. |

Great pics today! Marti...so cool that you got to work with that replica of the Wright Bros. plane. I saw the original at the Smithsonian in DC. And we have a gentleman that is a member of our church that flies those planes in Iraq and Afghanistan by remote. Sort of like playing video games  |

PANDA UPDATE Monday, July 27 Xi Lan continues to grow and topped the scale at over 22 kg this morning. Surprisingly, he actually weighs less than Mei Lan did at this age. It is not by much, but I thought it was interesting. He has been eating more bamboo then Mei Lan did at this age. He also seems to enjoy eating his biscuits and fruit very much. The difference might be that he just exercies more than Mei Lan did. She often slept the days away, whereas he likes to play with Lun Lun. Joseph T. There used to be this comedian that was an older gentlemen and he always joked about how it wasn't so bad to have Alzheimers. He said he got to meet new people everyday. |

Nice shots of the Wright Flyer! There is a wright model B flyer at the Franklin Instutute in Philadelphia with a rather interesting provinance as they would say on "The Antiques Road Show". Prior to restoration ![]() After restoration ![]() From the Franklin Institute Website: The Wright Model B was the first plane manufactured in quantity by the Wright Brothers. It was the first time Wilbur and Orville used a rear stabilizer. The plane has skids and wheels, allowing for take-off and landing on any level field. The Wright Brothers enforced a strict policy for those interested in acquiring one of their flying machines; in order to buy a plane from them, you had to first take flying lessons at their factory in Ohio. Wilbur and Orville shipped the plane to the customer only when they felt that person was capable of flying it. In 1911, a Model B biplane cost about $5,000. This particular Model B, purchased by a young Philadelphian named Grover Cleveland Bergdoll in 1912 and donated to The Franklin Institute in 1934, took to the skies for about 748 flights before being placed in storage. The plane was orginally owned and flown by "america's most famous draft dodger", Grover Cleveland Bergdoll who refused to serve in ww 1 and who offered his service to the Kaiser of Germany. Upon his arrest he escaped Governor's Island by some means and escaped to Germany. He was recaptured and was imprisoned for a period of time. |

HELLO FROM THE PATIO AT THE ISTHMUS ON BEAUTIFUL CATALINA Thank you all for the Birthday wishes and Happy Birthday too to KareninSocali. We had a great crossing yesterday, seas were very friendly---we went straight to TR nest area. We were so happy to see one of the Fledglings, perched proudly and quietly on a large snag on the hillside---. We could not get a photo as the boat was rocking too much close to shore. We moored at HenRock Cove, which is exactly where I hoped we could moor, cannot always do so due to surges, but was fine yesterday. I so wanted to go to sleep there and wake up at 65 years old at one of my favorite spots at the Island. We plan to snorkel this afternoon and tomorrow go around WEST END to Cat Harbor and stay there two nights, then come back around to the Isthmus or proceed to HenRock Cove again for the last night and we will check out the TR nest again then too. Have a great week everyone, happy Nest Observing! |
