Hi Everybody, The Catalina eagles have fledged! Last week, the two youngest eaglets at the West End nest, K97 and K98, successfully fledged and started exploring their territory. Also, Pete spotted K87, one of the Two Harbors eaglets flying over the west end of the island and picked up K91’s signal in that area as well, so K97, K98, K91 and K87 will soon be hanging out together. We have more great news. Last week, Pete received a report of a sub-adult bald eagle, with an 88 tag number on its wings, that was a Baker Beach, Oregon on July 22nd, 2009. If you recall, a few weeks ago Pete and I had been looking for K88 on the island because his radio was giving out a mortality signal. We didn’t find the bird, we just found his dropped transmitter and we hoped the bird was safe somewhere else. It is really good to know that K88 is back in Oregon and people have spotted him. K88 has a peculiar traveling pattern; he started here on Catalina, headed up north to OR for several months, came back to Catalina, “dropped” his transmitter, and headed back to OR. The people who reported it to us were kind enough to send us a picture of the approximate location of the observation. ![]() K90, the Seal Rocks juvenile, has left its territory and he’s exploring the adjacent canyons and bays. Deer hunting season started a few weeks ago on the island so I’m pretty sure our young eagles will soon pick up on that until they learn how to fish. K99, the Pinnacle Rock juvenile, remains in her territory for now but soon will join the rest of the youngsters. K96 and K94, the Twin Rocks juveniles are also staying in their territory for now but their time “at home” is almost up! I was finally able to get visual on both of these birds at the same time so even though I couldn’t read the tags because of the long distance and the heat waves, I watched them both fly one right over the other telling me they are doing just fine. ![]() ![]() On Saturday night, we had something awfully unusual happen to one of our nests. For some reason, two young men climbed to the West End nest. Since we have a live camera at this site, many of our eagle watchers noticed the men on the nest and alerted us of the incident on our discussion forum. Both, Pete and I were out of the office at the time so we didn’t find out until a couple of hours after it had happened. http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCAM/i...pic=4226&st=105 Catalina Island Conservancy ranges and the local Sheriff started working immediately after Pete notified them of the intruders that same night. On Monday, the two young men were identified and officials from the Sheriff’s Office and The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are conducting an investigation given that disturbing an active bald eagle’s nest is highly illegal and it is a violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. To read more about this act and its regulations go to: http://www.fws.gov/midwest/Eagle/guidelines/bgepa.html For a list of laws, treaties and regulation go to: http://www.fws.gov/permits/ltr/ltr.shtml The recently hatched eaglets were on the nest just minutes before the men climbed up but the eaglets flew back less than a half hour after the men seemed to have left the area. Their behavior doesn’t seem to have been affected by the incident, however our camera view of the area is limited to the nest therefore we can’t tell if there’re any damages done to the area. We suspect not many, or at least not more than severe weather could have done. Our concern is for nest year’s breeding season since there is always a possibility for the eagles to abandon a nest/territory if they feel threatened at the current one. The eagles have been nesting at this particular site for 18 years so it is unlikely that they would abandon it but it is always better to prevent, that’s why these regulations exist. I will let you know more about the case as it develops. Thank you to all the online viewers who are always looking out for the eagles; your support is highly appreciated. Steffani |

Hi, Steffani, Great update-- glad they caught those bozos! I'm sure they must have been shocked to be located and charged with whatever they are charged with. I'm just glad the eaglets are old enough to be out of the nest. What if there had been babies there? <shudder> And good news about K-88. He's traveling the country this summer. Keep up the good work! I was happy to be able to tell you that in person last weekend. Suzy and I were both impressed with all we saw! /auri |

Steffani, great news about K88! Our hero! I sure hope the Sheriff’s Office and The USFWS nail those two idiots trampling across the nest! As you said, this could be a real disaster if there were chicks or eggs on the nest. And the worse case scenario Wray and Superman abandoning their next. I hope they pay the price for stupidity.

Steffani. Great to hear that K-88 is alive and well after all Oregon has lots to offer him, but he seems to know where 'home' is ![]() Hope those WE sisters remember too, when they decide to do some traveling of their own. for all the fledglings from all the nests we have watched this season. As for those two imbeciles who tramped over the WE nest not once, but twice  They should have a very severe punishment so it will send the message to John Q Public that you must not interfere with Mother Nature and in particular IWS eagles and their nests. Hopefully there will be a newspaper story about this whole situation and the final outcome

Great report Steffani! What creeps that would bother a nest in the wild. I hope they throw the book at them and put them in the slammer (ask me how I really feel). And thank you to the forum members that watch the nests for those of us that can't and were able to report this in a timely fashion. Way to go!!!! Loved the news about our babies all doing well and #88. Thank you IWS. |

Great update Steffani Good news on K-88's explorations, after giving us a scare, before his dropped transmitter was discovered. At least he knows where "home" is and came back to drop it off there. Very glad that you have been able to see all of this years fledglings. :soar: And I'm really glad that they have identified the 2 idiots from Saturday night. They really upset so many of us when that happened. I, too, hope their punishment is befitting their crime of disturbing an active eagles nest. I was very happy to see K-97 and K-98 back on the nest shortly thereafter. We all await further information from the IWS staff on this case. Thank you for all you do and for keeping us up to date. |

STEFFANIGreat news about TR K88 Juvie---Always heartwarming to know he is surviving his first year--off the Island, back home and now off on his life adventures way up in Oregon. Amazing that the Sheriff's Dept could identify those young men who violated WE! Hopefully they can be found and given a stern lesson. |
